Buckeye Duo Set for Saturday's NCAA Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Addie Engel and Daniella Santos of the Ohio State women's cross country team will run in the NCAA Championships Saturday at Panorama Farms Cross Country Course in Earlysville, Va. The women's 6K will start at 10:20 a.m. and be aired on ESPNU and the ESPN App, with the broadcast beginning at 9:30 a.m. The awards ceremony will be streamed through WatchESPN and the ESPN App beginning at noon. Live results will be available HERE. Tickets for the championships are sold out, with approximately 5,000 fans expected.Â

Engel and Santos automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships after finishing second and seventh, respectively, at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championships. The Top 4 finishers not on a team that qualified its squad earn automatic berths into the NCAA field.

- This will be the third NCAA appearance for Engel as she becomes the first in school history to make three trips to the NCAA championship race and the first to earn two individual spots. She was an individual qualifier in 2021 when she finished 66th at the championship meet.
- Last year the Buckeyes qualified as a team and Engel finished 10th to earn All-America honors.
- Santos was 61st at the NCAA meet a season ago in her first trip to the national race.
- Engel and Santos give Ohio State 11 individual qualifier spots, including nine since 2010.
- Kathy Monard finished ninth at the 1986 race, the highest finish in school history, with Engel just behind after a 10th-place finish last season to become the program's fourth NCAA All-American.
- Katie Borchers posted two Top 40 finishes and is the program's first two-time NCAA All-American.
- Maureen Cogan, who was inducted into the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame this fall, earned AIAW All-America accolades in 1981 and NCAA All-America honors in 1983.
- Engel's time of 19:50.4 last year was the program's best in an NCAA Championships 6K race, with her 20:15.4 in 2021 ranking second. Santos recorded the third-fastest time last year (20:22.4) and Andrea Kuhn had the fourth-fastest (20:27.3) that same year. Katie Borchers ran 20:38.5 in 2014 to rank fifth all-time. Â

- This year Engel claimed her second Big Ten title, the first two in program history, and she is a program's only three-time All-Big Ten honoree. She was also the 2022 Big Ten Athlete of the Year.Â
- She joined Michelle Thomas (2012-14) as Buckeyes to earn All-Great Lakes Region accolades three times after she placed among the top three for the third time this year at the regional championships.
- Engel's runner-up finish at regionals this year marked her 12th career Top 2 finish and her sixth this season. She has been in the Top 16 of in 20 of her last 21 races, with the lone exception the 2021 NCAA Championships in her debut at the race.Â
- She was a three-time Big Ten Athlete of the Week this season and also earned her second NCAA Athlete of the Week honor.
- The health sciences major is a three-time Ohio State Scholar-Athlete and an Academic All-Big Ten selection. She earned USFTFCCCA All-Academic Athlete accolades in cross country in 2021 and '22 and in track in 2022.Â
- In track, Engel was the 2023 Big Ten Outdoor Champion in the 10,000m.Â
- Santos was eighth at the Big Ten Championships this year, picking up second team all-league honors, and she was a first team honoree last year with a fourth-place finish.
- She posted her second straight seventh-place finish at regionals this year and is the seventh Buckeye to earn all-region honors at least twice. Â
- In track, Santos broke the program indoor 5000m and outdoor 10000m records last year.
- An early education major, Santos is a three-time Ohio State Scholar-Athlete and two-time Academic All-Big Ten choice.Â
