McMahon Named to 2024 Cheryl Miller Award Preseason Watch List

COLUMBUS, Ohio?– The Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) announced the 20 watch-list candidates for the 2024 Cheryl Miller Award on Wednesday. Sophomore forward Cotie McMahon was one of the 20 players named to the preseason watch list.

Named after the three-time Naismith Player of the Year and Class of 1995 Hall of Famer, the annual award, in its seventh year, recognizes the top small forwards in women's NCAA Division I college basketball. A national committee of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 candidates.

McMahon was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year last season and also earned a spot on the All-Big Ten Second Team, All-Big Ten Freshman Team and All-Big Ten Tournament Team as she helped lead Ohio State to its first NCAA Elite Eight appearance in 30 years in 2022-23. The six-time Big Ten Freshman of the Week scored 543 points to rank 30^th in program history in single-season points. McMahon averaged 15.1 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.6 steals in 29.1 minutes per game during her freshman campaign, shooting 51 percent from the floor. She ranked in the top-20 in the Big Ten in 11 categories, including seventh in field goals (201), eighth in points (543), 11^th in steals (58) and 20^th in rebounding (5.5 rpg). Among Division I freshman, McMahon ranked third in field goals, fourth in field goal percentage, fourth in free throw attempts, fifth in points, sixth in free throws made, ninth in scoring and 12^th in steals. She capped an impressive year by scoring in double figures in every postseason game and went on to make her second Team USA appearance this past summer.

Fans are encouraged to participate in Fan Voting, presented by Dell Technologies, in each of the three rounds starting Friday, October 20. In late January, the watch list of 20 players for the 2024 Cheryl Miller Award will be narrowed to 10 and then in late February to just five. In March the five finalists will be presented to Miller and the Hall of Fame's selection committee, where a winner will be selected.
