No. 5 Buckeyes Sweep Tennessee Saturday Evening

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 5 Ohio State Buckeyes (4-3) swept (25-23, 25-23, 25-16) Tennessee (6-6) on Saturday evening in Pittsburgh.
The first set was close from start to finish, with the Buckeyes using a 3-0 run toward the end of the set to win 25-23. The second set featured small runs by each team early before Ohio State used a run out of the media timeout to take a lead that wouldn’t be relinquished, winning the set by a 25-23 mark. Ohio State scored the first three points of the third set and did not look back, winning by a convincing 25-16 margin.
How it Happened
Emily Londot began the match with a kill, but Tennessee scored the next three points to take an early 3-1 lead. Kylie Murr tied the set at six with a service ace. A kill from Reilly MacNeill capped a 3-0 OSU run, giving the Buckeyes a 13-12 lead, their first lead since scoring the first point of the set. Tennessee led 15-14 at the media timeout. Mac Podraza tied the set out of the media timeout with a kill. The teams continued to trade points, being tied at points 15 through 18, until back-to-back kills from MacNeill and Londot forced a Tennessee timeout with Ohio State leading 20-18. The Lady Vols used a 3-0 run out of their timeout to take a 21-20 lead. The Buckeyes scored the next three points, including their first block of the match from Gabby Gonzales and Adria Powell, to take a 24-22 lead and force a second Tennessee timeout. The Lady Vols scored out of the timeout, but the Buckeyes earned the 25-23 set win.
Tennessee scored first in the second set, but Ohio State responded with four of the next five points to lead 4-2. The Lady Vols took a 6-5 lead with three-unanswered points. The Lady Vols won a challenge amidst a 3-0 run to take a 10-8 lead, but the Buckeyes immediately responded with a 4-0 run of their own to lead 12-10. Tennessee once again scored three-consecutive points to take a 13-12 lead, but OSU held the narrow 15-14 advantage at the media timeout. The Buckeyes went on a 4-1 run to take the largest lead of the set for either team at 19-16. The Lady Vols got within one at 19-18 before the teams traded points. Ohio State was leading 22-21 before back-to-back points set the Buckeyes up for set point leading 24-21. Tennessee scored twice before Jenaisya Moore sealed the second set with her seventh kill of the match.
Londot began the third set with a kill as the Buckeyes scored the first three points. Ohio State traded points until another 3-0 run gave OSU the 10-4 advantage. Back-to-back kills from Gonzales and Moore extended the Buckeyes’ lead to 13-6, forcing a Tennessee timeout. Ohio State scored the next pair of points out of the timeout to lead 15-6, the largest lead of the match. The Buckeyes were doubled up at 18-9 before the Lady Vols put together their largest run of the match to close the gap to 18-13 and force an OSU timeout. The Buckeyes scored the next three points out of the timeout and led 23-14 after a Tennessee ball-handling error. Ohio State sealed the 25-16 set on a Lady Vols service error.

- This is the Buckeyes’ second sweep of the season.
- Emily Londot totaled 11 kills today as she’s had at least 10 kills in each match this season. She also recorded her 800th career kill.
- Reilly MacNeill totaled a career-high three kills and two blocks in her first career start.
- Jenaisya Moore recorded at least 10 kills for the fourth-consecutive match.
- Gabby Gonzales tied her season-high two services aces. Mac Podraza and Adria Powell each had season-high kill totals with five and seven, respectively.
- Set one: The set featured 14 ties and six lead changes as neither team scored more than three-consecutive points.
- Set one: The Buckeyes hit .344 during the first set.
- Set two: Despite each team going on small runs throughout the set, neither team led by more than two points until Ohio State’s back-to-back points gave the Buckeyes a 19-16 lead.
- Set two: The OSU defense forced Tennessee to hit just .139 during the set.
- Set three: Ohio State did not commit a hitting error until the score was 15-7 and finished the set hitting .538. Tennessee recorded just five kills in the set, hitting .000 until its final kill.
