No. 22 Buckeyes Earn 3-All Draw at No. 14 Akron

COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 22 Ohio State (4-0-2) battled to a 3-all draw at No. 14 Akron (4-1-1) Tuesday at FirstEnergy Stadium. The Zips scored twice late in the second half to overcome an Ohio State 2-1 advantage before the Buckeyes evened the match at 3-all in the 83rd minute.
How it Happened
No. 14 Akron got on the board first with a goal in the 5th minute to put the Zips up 1-0.
The Buckeyes responded quickly to tie it at 1-all when junior Owen Sullivan scored off a corner kick delivered by sophomore Anthony Samways. It was tipped by freshman Marko Borkovic at the center of the net to the right of the Akron keeper where Sullivan put it away for the score in the 7th minute. It was Sullivan’s first career goal in 16 Ohio State games.
Samways has four five assists, three this season. Borkovic, who earlier in the day was named the Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week, recorded his first career assist for the Buckeyes to go with three goals.
Senior Xavier Green scored unassisted in the 55th minute to brake the 1-all deadlock and give Ohio State the 2-1 lead. It was Green’s seventh career goal in 65 career games.
Akron came right back to tie the game at 2-all in the 63rd minute on a goal by Jason Shokalook. The Zips then took the 3-2 lead in the 69th minute on a Stefan Dobrijevic goal.
Shokalook was assessed a red card in the 74th minute forcing the Zips to play the final 16 minutes with 10 men. The Buckeyes took advantage in the 83rd minute when Samways sent in a corner kick that was headed in by senior Brayden Durbin to even the match at 3-all. It was Durbin’s first career goal.
Senior keeper Keagan McLaughlin did not start for the Buckeyes after recording his fourth-consecutive shutout the last time out vs. Butler. He has allowed just one goal in five games this season in keeping opponents scoreless over his last 399 minutes of game action. Redshirt freshman Max Trejo made his first career start between the pipes for the Buckeyes.
Ohio State’s scoreless minute streak ended at 403 with Akron’s score in the 5th minute.

- Redshirt Freshman Max Trejo earned his first start in goal. Freshman Marko Borkovic made his first career start as well.
- The Buckeyes entered a pair of Top 25 polls Tuesday. Ohio State came in at No. 24 in the TopDrawerSoccer Poll and at No. 22 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll.
- Senior Keagan McLaughlin has posted four-consecutive shutouts and has held opponents to just one goal over his first five games of the season. The Notre Dame transfer, has 14-career shutouts and four as a Buckeye.
- McLaughlin’s efforts in a 1-0 win at Bowling Green and a 2-0 home win over Wright State earned him the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week (9/6/22). He was named the Big Ten’s Co-Defensive Player of the Week Tuesday after the shutout of Butler last Friday (2-0).
- McLaughlin also was named to the CollegeSoccerNews Team of the Week as the keeper for the week ending Sept. 11.
- Freshman Marko Borkovic was named the Big Ten’s Co-Offensive Player of the Week Tuesday. He has three goals this season and two game-winners. He scored the opening goal of the game vs. the Bulldogs last Friday.
- Ohio State last recorded four-consecutive shutouts in 2017 when the Buckeyes posted six-consecutive blankings from 9/1/17 to 9/22/17). Ohio State shutout seven of its first eight foes that year.
- Laurence Wootton, Nathan Demian and Luciano Pechota were named to the 2022 Wolstein Classic All-Tournament Team. Wootton had a goal and an assist, Pechota recorded a pair of assists and Demian led a defense that allowed just one goal over the two games.
- The Big Ten named Wootton its Offensive Player of the Week Aug. 30 for his efforts in the Wolstein Classic.
- Wootton, Deylen Vellios and Owen Sullivan are the designated captains for the 2022 season.
- In games played at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium since it opened in 1999, Ohio State is 127-67-33.
- Six Buckeyes from the 2021 roster were named 2022 Big Ten Distinguished Scholars. Samuel Buzzas, Tommy Marusic along with returners
- Connor DesRoches, Devyn Etling, Thomas Gilej and Peter Van Euwen were recognized.
- Seniors Xavier Green and Etling elected to return to the Ohio State roster for a fifth year in 2022. Green started his Ohio State career in 2018 while Etling has been with the program since 2017 when he received a medical redshirt.
- Former Ohio State head coach John Bluem was inducted into the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame with the class of 2022 during ceremonies Sept. 9 at the Covelli Center on the Ohio State campus. Bluem posted 206 wins over 21 seasons (1997-2017) with 10 trips to the NCAA Tournament, including a run to the College Cup Final in 2007.
