COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State Department of Athletics was saddened to learn of the passing of Gary Moeller, a three-year letterwinner for the Buckeyes (1960-62) and co-captain of the 1962 team. The news was reported on the University of Michigan’s official athletic website.
Moeller was born and raised in Lima, Ohio and was a standout athlete at Lima South and Lima Senior High School. He played linebacker for head coach Woody Hayes from 1960 through 1962. In 1961, Moeller helped the Buckeyes to an 8-0-1 record and a Football Writers Association of America national championship. As a senior in 1962, he was a co-captain along with Robert Vogel.
Following his collegiate playing days, Moeller was the head coach at Bellefontaine High School before joining Bo Schembechler’s staff at Miami University in 1967. In 1969, he followed Schembechler to Michigan and coached the Wolverines’ defensive ends (1969-72) before becoming the team’s defensive coordinator from 1973-76. Following a stint as the head coach at Illinois (1977-79), Moeller returned the Michigan in 1980 and eventually succeeded Schembechler as the Wolverines’ head coach in 1990.
Moeller was head coach at Michigan for five years (1990-94), guiding the program to a 44-13-3 record and to three Big Ten Conference championships.
