No. 10 Buckeyes Down Gophers to Advance in Big Ten Tournament

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 10 Ohio State women's tennis team picked up the doubles point and three straight-set singles victories to defeat Minnesota 4-0 in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament Friday in Iowa City, Iowa.
Ohio State, the tournament's No. 1 seed, improves to 19-4 this season. The No. 8 seed Gophers fall to 18-10.
The Buckeyes will face No. 4 seed Wisconsin, which beat No. 5 Illinois 4-1 in the quarterfinals, at 3 p.m. ET Saturday in the semifinals. No. 2 Michigan and No. 3 Northwestern will meet in the first semifinal of the day. The championship match is set for 1 p.m. ET Sunday. "We played a really solid match today. It was good for Shelly to be back out there competing for us. We are happy to get to play again tomorrow and now it's just about getting ready for another tough match."
In Doubles
- Ohio State took a 1-0 lead, notching the doubles point with wins on courts one and two.
- At No. 1, Kolie Allen and Isabelle Boulais topped Dalila Said and Rachel Hanford, 6-2, jumping out to a 4-1 lead and winning the final two games.
- On court two, Irina Cantos Siemers and Lucia Marzal took the final two games of their match against Emilee Duong and Anfisa Danilchenko for a 6-4 victory.
- The court three match was suspended with the teams tied at five. The Buckeye tandem of Sydni Ratliff and Kathleen Jones came back from down a break to tie the match at four.
In Singles
- The Buckeyes won all six first sets against the Gophers to take command of the match.
- Freshman Shelly Bereznyak lost just one game on court six vs. Lucy Lu to put the Buckeyes up, 2-0.
- On court five, Marzal was a 6-1, 6-4 winner against Said. The Buckeye clinched the win with the no-ad point serving 5-4 in the second set.
- Allen posted the fourth point for Ohio State, as she downed Vaisa Karvouni, 6-4, 6-0, on court four. The Buckeye came back from down a break early in the first set and broke to win before not allowing a game in the second set.
- On courts one and two, respectively, Cantos Siemers and Boulais both were a game from clinching when the match was suspended. Cantos Siemers led Duong 6-4, 5-4, and Boulais was up 7-5, 5-1. On court three, Ratliff dropped just one game in the first set but lost the second, 6-4. She was ahead 3-0 in the third.
