COLUMBUS, Ohio – A five-medal performance from Ohio State swimmers combined with 119 points from the diving squad propelled the Buckeye swimming and diving team to first place after two days of the 2022 Men’s Big Ten Swimming & Diving Championships. The Buckeyes have amassed 487.5 points through seven events, leading second-place Indiana by 38.5 points.
Ohio State won its second consecutive 50 freestyle conference title on Thursday, but this year it was Hunter Armstrong taking the win for the Buckeyes. After besting his school record from last season in the morning preliminary session with a swim of 19.02, the 2020 Olympian improved his Buckeye record by nearly a tenth of a second with a winning time of 18.93. Senior Sem Andreis, the 2021 conference champion, followed in a time of 19.15 for silver. Armstrong raced the first individual NCAA automatic qualifying time of the meet while Andreis, 12th-place Gaziev (19.61) and 20th-place James Ward (19.82) earned NCAA provisional times. This year marks the first time in the history of the event that the Buckeyes have won back-to-back 50 freestyle crowns at the Big Ten championship meet.
The Buckeyes broke their third school record of the day with their silver medal result in the 400 medley relay. Armstrong, Hudson McDaniel, Alex Quach and Andreis raced a time of 3:01.44 to beat the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center record and best Ohio State’s record by nearly two seconds. Armstrong’s 100 backstroke leadoff split of 44.36 ties for the seventh-best split of all time.
Eight Buckeye divers combined for 119 points on the 1-meter board in the first diving event of the championship meet. Jacob Fielding led the group with a fifth-place finish and a final score of 397.35. Joey Canova (396.55) and Lyle Yost (384.50) also dove in the A final, earning sixth and seventh-place, respectively. In the consolation final, Clayton Chaplin scored a 357.85 to take 11th overall. Jacob Siler (334.75) and Mike Parker (320.65) finished 14th and 15th. Mo Noaman and Hunter Grannum also recorded points for the Buckeyes with their preliminary dive scores.

Thomas Watkins (1:45.66) and Pete Krusinski (1:46.51) took 12th and 15th overall and all three Buckeyes earned NCAA B cuts with their swims.
