
Buckeyes Down Bearcats, 18-9

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women's lacrosse team improved to 2-0 this season with an 18-9 win over Cincinnati in Nippert Stadium Wednesday. The Buckeyes, who had nine players score multiple goals, led 4-1 after the first quarter and 8-3 at halftime. The Bearcats made it a two-goal game late in the third, but Ohio State responded with an eight-goal run to pull away for the victory. Clare Johnston led all Buckeye scorers with four goals and five points and goalie Regan Alexander made 13 saves for Ohio State.
The Short Story
The Buckeyes scored the game's first three goals, all in the opening five minutes. Jamie Level opened the scoring, followed by tallies from Clare Johnston and Lindsay Epstein. Cincinnati stopped Ohio State's run, but Johnston scored the final goal of the first quarter for a 4-1 lead.
The second quarter started with the teams trading goals, with Janie Cowley scoring for the Buckeyes at 13:25. After a Bearcat found the back of the cage, Johnston scored back-to-back free position goals at 11:16 and 7:50 for a 7-2 Ohio State lead. Each team scored once in the final 3:07, with Epstein notching the Buckeye goal, and Ohio State led 8-3 at the half.
Cincinnati scored five of the first seven goals of the second half to cut the Buckeye lead to 10-8 with 3:03 left in the third stanza. Ohio State responded with an eight-goal run, with two in the third quarter and six in the fourth, to pull away. With the score cut to two, Jamie Lasda answered just 12 seconds later and Chloe Johnson followed at 1:05 for a 12-8 Buckeye advantage after three quarters.
The fourth quarter was all Buckeyes. Nicole Ferrara (twice), Lasda, Level and Ali Beekhuizen (twice) all scored in the fourth to stretch the Ohio State advantage. A late Bearcat goal led to the 18-9 final.
Ohio State outshot the Bearcats, 37-33. Regan Alexander had a career-high 13 saves for the Buckeyes in 48:46 and Claire Morris made one save in 10:35 for the Buckeyes.
Noting the Buckeyes
- Clare Johnston had a career-high four goals and five points to lead Ohio State. It was her fourth career multiple-goal game and her fifth game in the Scarlet and Gray with three or more points.
- Jamie Lasda had four points on two goals and two assists to set her career best, passing the three she had last week. She also had two caused turnovers.
- Jamie Level had her third multi-goal outing in the Scarlet and Gray with two tallies on the day, adding an assist for a three-point performance to match her personal best.
- Nicole Ferrara had two goals and an assist for three points in the win. She leads the Buckeyes with eight points this year and has multiple goals in seven straight outings.
- Ferrara and Lasda are first for the Buckeyes with five goals each this year.
- Jane Cowley caused a career-best three turnovers. Her goal was her first since 2020.
- Johnson had a second-straight two-goal game and her seventh in the Scarlet and Gray with two or more tallies. It was her fourth career three-point day and second in a row.
- Epstein had her eighth game with seven or more goals and her 11th multiple-goal game in the Scarlet and Gray.
