COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State women’s hockey’s Sophie Jaques is the WCHA’s January Defender of the Month, the conference announced Tuesday. She has now received three of the league’s four Defender of the Month honors awarded this season.
In January, Jaques led the Buckeyes with 14 points on a team-high five goals and nine assists in six games. The blueliner led the team in points in all but one game last month.
Jaques paced Ohio State in the opening series of 2022, recording seven points on four assists and three goals with a +9 on ice rating against Lindenwood. She added a power play goal in the series for her ninth of the season.
During the series with Minnesota Duluth, Jaques added a team-high two points on 11 shots. She tallied the game-winning goal in game two of the weekend to help the Buckeyes split the series with the Bulldogs.
Last weekend, the Toronto, Ont. native had a hand in every Ohio State goal scored in the series against Minnesota. She scored one goal and assisted the other four as the team took the regular-season series against the Gophers, 3-1.
Jaques is a senior for the Buckeyes this season majoring in civil engineering. So far this season, she has recorded a team-high 44 points and is one point from tying the record for single season points by a Buckeye defenseman.
Ohio State travels to Mankato, Minn. to play Minnesota State this weekend. The Buckeyes and Mavericks faceoff at 7 p.m. ET Friday and 3 p.m. ET Saturday. Both games will be streamed on B1G+ (subscription required).
