Ohio State Earns Second Road Sweep of the Weekend on Saturday

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 6 Ohio State Buckeyes (17-5, 13-1 B1G) earned the sweep (25-13, 25-18, 27-25) against Michigan State (10-15, 1-13 B1G) in East Lansing on Saturday evening.
The opening set was close early with the teams being tied at nine before Ohio State pulled away to earn the 25-13 set win. The Buckeyes won set two by a 25-18 margin by scoring eight of the final 10 points of the set. The third set was tight throughout as Ohio State needed extra points to seal the sweep with a 27-25 set win.
How it Happened
Michigan State scored the first three points to open the match before a block from Adria Powell and Emily Londot got Ohio State on the board. The Spartans built an early 6-2 lead on a pair of 3-0 runs. The Buckeyes used a pair of 3-0 runs of their own to take their first lead of the set at 9-8. Michigan State called timeout with OSU leading 15-11 after three-consecutive Buckeye points. An ace from Kylie Murr forced a second Spartans timeout with the Buckeyes in front by a 19-12 margin. Ohio State continued a 7-0 run to extend the lead to 23-12 and earned the 25-13 set win on a Michigan State attack error.
The Spartans scored first to open the second set, but a 6-1 Buckeyes run saw OSU up 6-3 before MSU could tie the set at six. The Buckeyes held the lead until back-to-back Michigan State points gave MSU the 10-9 advantage. Ohio State scored the next three points to take the 12-10 lead, prompting a Michigan State timeout. The Buckeyes extended their run to 6-0 to lead 15-10 and forced a second Spartan timeout. OSU scored again out of the timeout before MSU got within one at 17-16 to prompt a Buckeyes timeout. Ohio State scored eight of the final 10 points in the set to earn the 25-18 set win on a kill from Rylee Rader.
MSU opened scoring in the third set before OSU built an early 5-3 lead. Michigan State was able to tie the set at five, seven and eight before taking the lead back at 10-8. The Spartans scored five of six points to take the 12-9 lead, forcing an OSU timeout. Ohio State tied the set at 12 and 13 out of the timeout. Michigan State built a trio of three-point leads at 16-13, 18-15 and 19-16. OSU tied the set at 20 to force an MSU timeout. The Spartans scored three-unanswered points to take a 23-21 lead, prompting a Buckeye timeout. Ohio State tied the set at 23 out of the timeout to force a Michigan State timeout. MSU scored out of the timeout, but OSU responded with four of the final five points to win the set by a 27-25 mark.

Match Notes
- The Buckeye defense forced its opponent to hit under .200 for the 14th time this season and the 12th time in Big Ten play.
- This is fifth time in Big Ten play that the OSU defense has forced its opponent to hit under .100.
- This is the seventh time this season that the Ohio State defense has totaled at least 10.0 blocks.
- Ohio State is 12-1 this season when three or more players each contribute at least 10 kills apiece.
- This is the third time this season that the Buckeyes have not allowed a 10+ kill performance among the opponents. Previous matches were against Tennessee and the Sept. 23 match against Iowa.
- Emily Londot reached double-figure kills first in the match, totaling at least 10 kills for the 19th time this season. She finished with 14 kills on the match and became the 24th player in program history to reach 1,000 career kills.
- Rylee Rader recorded her 600th career kill.
- Adria Powell tied her career-high eight blocks.
- Jenaisya Moore recorded at least 10 kills for the 15th time this season, finishing with 11.
- Gabby Gonzales recorded her 33rd service ace of the season, leading the team. She also recorded her 14th match of the season with 10 or more kills, totaling 10 kills tonight.
- Mac Podraza earned her eighth double-double of the season (seventh in conference play) with 24 assists and 10 digs. This is Podraza’s eighth match of the season recording at least 10 digs.
- This is Kylie Murr’s fourth match of the season with more than one ace.
- Set one: After being tied at nine, Ohio State outscored Michigan State 16-4 for the remainder of the set. The Buckeyes hit .350 compared to the Spartans’ -.280 during the set.
- Set two: Michigan State was still hitting in the red (-.032) after the completion of the second set.
- Set three: The set featured 12 ties and five lead changes in the closest set of the match.
