Ohio State Hosts 2022 Big Ten Tournament This Weekend

COLUMBUS, Ohio – For the first time in nine years, the nation's premier conference field hockey tournament will be played in Columbus. The Buckeyes, who finished 11-7 during the regular season, open postseason play against second-seeded Maryland (16-2, 7-1) on Thursday at 2 p.m.

Briefly on the Buckeyes
- Ohio State finished the regular season with wins in eight of its last 10 games and an 11-7 overall record.
- The Buckeyes were 3-5 in Big Ten games, notching wins over Michigan State (2-1 in OT), Indiana (2-1) and No. 5 Iowa (2-0).
- Ohio State averaged 3.5 goals per game over its last 10 games and overall was 17th nationally in scoring during the regular season (2.65 goals/game).
- That strong offensive play was backed up by stellar defense. The Buckeyes' 1.10 goals-against average ranks 12th in the country.
- Overall, Ohio State had top 20 national rankings in goals-against average (12th), goals per game (17th), save percentage (11th), scoring average (17th), scoring margin (14th) and shutouts per game (11th).
- Goalkeeper Abby Danson led the Big Ten in save percentage (.800) and last Sunday notched her sixth shutout of the season.
- Five players finished the regular season with double-figure points: Sarah Charley (11G, 2A, 24 pts.), Leanne Bough (8G, 3A, 19 pts.), Makenna Webster (6G, 3A, 15 pts.), Emma Goldean (5G, 5A, 15 pts.) and Claudia Thomas (4G, 4A, 12 pts.).

Big Ten Tournament History
- The last time Ohio State played in the Big Ten Tournament – during the spring of 2021 – it made a memorable run to the conference championship game.
- The Buckeyes knocked off Penn State and Northwestern along the way, eventually falling in the title game to Michigan.
- Ohio State has one Big Ten Tournament title in its history: In 2001, the Buckeyes defeated Indiana, Michigan and Iowa on the way to the championship.
- The last time Ohio State hosted the Big Ten Tournament was 2013. That year, Ohio State upset Northwestern in the quarterfinals before losing an overtime game in the semifinals vs. Michigan State.

- Action gets underway with three quarterfinal games on Thursday. No. 4 seed Michigan faces No. 5 Iowa at 11 a.m., followed by No. 7 Ohio State and No. 2 Maryland at 2 p.m. The game concludes with third-seeded Northwestern tangling with No. 6-seeded Rutgers at 5 p.m.
- Top-seeded Penn State has a bye and will face the Michigan/Iowa winner in the first of two semifinals on Friday at 1:30 p.m. The other semifinals is at 4 p.m. The championship game is slated for Sunday, Nov. 6, at noon.
