No. 9 Ohio State Drops Hard-Fought Match to No. 2 Iowa

COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 9 Ohio State (5-2, 1-2) came up short in a battle with No. 2 Iowa (11-0, 5-0) Friday at the Covelli Center in front of a capacity crowd of 4,400. The Buckeyes closed to within 14-12 with two bouts remaining but the Hawkeyes scored the final seven points to win 21-12.
Senior Malik Heinselman got the Buckeyes started with an upset at 125. A takedown in overtime earned the Buckeyes the sudden victory, (7-5) win for No. 17 Heinselman over No. 10 Drake Ayala.
No. 2 Sammy Sasso earned his fifth win vs. a ranked foe this season with a 3-2 win by decision over No. 10 Max Murin at 149. The win was his 27th-consecutive win in dual competitions. Sasso’s streak includes wins in 20-consecutive Big Ten duals.
In the highly-anticipated bout at 165, Ohio State’s Carson Kharchla upset No. 1 Alex Marinelli, winning by decision, 3-2.
Kaleb Romero added a win at 184 in overtime for the last points of the night for the Buckeyes.

125 | No. 17 Malik Heinselman (OSU) vs. No. 10 Drake Ayala (IOWA)
Heinselman struck quickly with a takedown early in the first. Ayala escaped to make it 2-1 heading into the second. Ayala tied it with another escape to tie it at 2-all with two minutes to go. Heinselman escaped to take a 3-2 lead and then scored a takedown for a 5-3 advantage. A late Ayala score tied it at 5-all heading into sudden victory. Heinselman then got the bout-winning takedown to win by decision, 7-5.
133 | Dylan Koontz (OSU) vs. No. 3 Austin DeSanto (IOWA)
DeSanto led after the first period 10-1 and earned the win by technical fall, 19-4 (4:29).
141 | No. 23 Dylan D’Emilio (OSU) vs. No. 2 Jaydin Eierman (IOWA)
The bout went into the second period scoreless. Eierman put the first points on the board with a takedown early in the second and finished off the match to win by decision, 4-0.
149 | No. 2 Sammy Sasso (OSU) vs. No. 10 Max Murin (IOWA)
After a scoreless first, Sasso took the 1-0 lead with an escape to start the second. Murin earned a reversal in the third but Sasso got the points right back with a reversal of his own to win 3-2 by decision. The win was his fifth of the year vs. a ranked opponent.
157 | Jashon Hubbard (OSU) vs. No. 12 Kaleb Young (IOWA)
Young took a 3-0 lead into the final period and finished with a 4-0 win by decision.
165 | No. 7 Carson Kharchla (OSU) vs. No. 1 Alex Marinelli (IOWA)
Marinelli led 1-0 heading into the third period after an escape to start the second. Kharchla tied it at 1-all with an escape of his own with under a minute and then scored the winning takedown with 17 seconds left to take the bout by decision, 3-2.

174 | No. 7 Ethan Smith (OSU) vs. No. 2 Michael Kemerer (IOWA)
Kemerer led 2-1 after the first after a takedown and Smith escape. Kemerer led 5-1 after two. Smith got a reversal in the third but Kemerer held on for the 6-3 win by decision.
184 | No. 7 Kaleb Romero (OSU) vs. No. 18 Abe Assad (IOWA)
Romero got on the board first with an escape early in the second period for the 1-0 lead. An Iowa escape early in the third tied it at 1-all heading into sudden victory. Romero got the win by decision (3-2) with the takedown.
197 | No. 20 Gavin Hoffman (OSU) vs. No. 4 Jacob Warner (IOWA)
Warner took the early lead with a takedown and was then called for stalling to lead 2-1 to start the second. Hoffman tied it with an escape but was then called for stalling giving the Hawkeyes the 3-2 advantage with two minutes to go. Hoffman got a takedown between two Iowa escapes. Iowa was called for stalling but with a point for riding time won by decision, 6-5.
HWT | No. 12 Tate Orndorff (OSU) vs. No. 5 Tony Cassioppi (IOWA)
Tate scored the first takedown but trailed 3-2 after the first period. Cassioppi led 6-2 after two periods and won the bout by major decision, 13-4.
