COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s volleyball team (5-0) travels to Richmond, Virginia this weekend for the VCU Invitational. The Buckeyes open with a match against James Madison on Friday at 1 p.m. On Saturday, Ohio State plays Virginia Commonwealth at 9 a.m. before wrapping up the weekend against Virginia at 2 p.m. The match between OSU and VCU will be streamed live on ESPN+.
Last weekend, Ohio State won the Red Raider Classic with wins over Rhode Island, Texas State and Texas Tech. The Buckeyes opened the tournament with a sweep against Rhode Island (25-13, 25-11, 25-14). OSU went on to earn a four-set win against Texas State (25-17, 25-19, 23-25, 25-15). Ohio State beat Texas Tech in straight sets (25-14, 25-15, 25-13) to wrap up the weekend.
- OSU moved up two spots to be ranked No. 4 in the weekly AVCA poll on Monday. This is the Buckeyes’ highest ranking since the 1994 season, when OSU was ranked fourth in the final three polls of the season. Ohio State began the season ranked 11th.
- Freshman middle blocker Arica Davis was named Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week on Monday for the second-consecutive week. Davis posted a team-high 15 blocks (two solo, 1.50 per set) at the Red Raider Classic, also totaling 19 kills and hitting .517.
- Ohio State and James Madison have played just one time previously, with OSU earning the sweep (15-3, 15-1, 15-8) at the Buckeye Invitational on Sept. 4, 1992.
- The Buckeyes have won each of the three previous meetings with VCU but have never played in Richmond. OSU won the most recent match in four sets (25-19, 25-16, 24-26, 25-17) at the Sports Imports D.C. Koehl Classic in 2019.
- This is the first meeting between Ohio State and Virginia in program history.
- JMU enters the tournament with a 5-1 record with only loss coming to VCU during opening weekend. The Dukes earned three sweeps last weekend against Alabama State, Campbell and North Carolina Central.
- VCU is 4-2 entering the weekend. Last weekend at the Four Points Tallahassee Seminole Volleyball Invitational, the Rams began with a five-set win against Tulane before beating Samford in straight sets. VCU lost to Florida State in three sets to conclude the weekend.
- Virginia began the season with a 3-2 record. UVA opened the season with a lost to Maryland before earning victories against Hofstra and Central Connecticut. Last weekend, the Cavaliers beat Akron in five sets before being swept by Winthrop.
