COLUMBUS, Ohio – Megan McKenna scored her two second-half goals, including the game-winner with 5:07 remaining in double overtime, as No. 22 Ohio State (2-1) defeated Lafayette (2-1) 4-3 on Friday afternoon in the Buckeyes’ home-opener at Buckeye Varsity Field.
The Short Story
Ohio State trailed 2-0 at halftime and 3-2 late in the second half before mounting a comeback that was capped in the second extra session of McKenna, who took a pass off the stick of freshman Cameryn Forgash and beat Lafayette goalie Hailey Abbott to the lower right corner of the goal.
The Buckeyes tied the game at 2-all late in the third quarter and overcame a 3-2 fourth-quarter deficit thanks to an Emma Goldean goal in the 57th minute. In the first overtime, Lafayette appeared to have won the game on a Lineke Spanns goal, but video review overturned it and play continued on into the second overtime.
That’s when McKenna was set up perfectly by a pass from Forgash, leading her to team-best third goal of the season.
How the Goals Were Scored
- After a scoreless first quarter, Lafayette put two on the board in the second quarter to take a 2-0 lead at intermission.
- Audrey Sawers opened the scoring at 15:23 of the first half off a pass from Molly McAndrew. Sawers tapped in a cross in close range past Ohio State keeper Aaliyah Hernandez.
- Hanners then followed eight minutes later with an unassisted tally off a rebound from Hernandez’s goalie pads.
- Just 1:16 into the second half, Forgash started the Ohio State rally with an unassisted goal. She used her speed to outrace the Lafeyette defenders down the sideline and push a shot past Abbott.
- A give and go between McKenna and Pyle resulted in Ohio State’s second goal with less than two minutes remaining in the third quarter to tie the score at 2-all.
- McAndrew re-directed a penalty corner shot by Hannes four minutes into the fourth quarter to give Lafayette at 3-2 lead, but the Leopards would get a five-minute yellow card at the 53:55 mark of the fourth quarter, giving Ohio State a one-player advantage for nearly the remainder of the fourth quarter.
- And the Buckeyes would make them pay, getting an Emma Goldean goal on a scramble in front of the cage with 3:42 remaining that tied the score at 3-3.
This and That
- After being outshot 5-0 in the first half, Ohio State held a 23-5 shot advantage over the second half and the two overtime periods.
- Hernandez made four saves on the day, including one in overtime.
- Katie Pyle, a senior, finished with two assists.
- Ohio State had an 8-3 edge in penalty corners, including all three in the two overtime sessions.
- Friday was the first-ever matchup between Ohio State and Lafayette.
- Dating back to last season, six of the Buckeyes’ last eight games have been decided by one goal.
