Postgame Quotes
Ohio State 41, Tulsa 20
Sept. 18, 2021
Ryan Day, Ohio State head coach
Opening statement
“Overall, great to get a win and get last week out of our system. Certainly there are a lot of things to work on, on both sides of the ball. It was nice to see the run offense get going, that was an emphasis going into today’s game, but also stopping the run on defense. Those things were accomplished; it was a step in the right direction on this long journey.”
On the defense
“We stopped the run better and mixed up the looks. We had a lot of conversation this week that involved a couple of different things. But I thought we changed a few things up structurally. Again, we will look at the film, analyze that, and see how it went. But, for the most part, I feel they played with a lot of energy, prepared well throughout the week and everyone was on the same page. There were some in-game adjustments that were done better and more efficient than the week before.”
On the defensive play calling
“Yeah, everyone has input on the game play. Matt was calling it today. Kerry was put up there to help out and make in-game adjustments.”
On freshman TreVeyon Henderson
“Since he’s come here, he has been very mature. He does not act like a freshman and takes his job very seriously. He ran hard today and the offensive line really established the line of scrimmage and we were able to control the game at times. The tight ends played hard and blocked well. But when he gets to the second level, he has the ability to make home run plays.”
On balancing the offense
“I don’t know if we hit our stride totally in that area. It is the job of our staff and our leaders on offense to find balance in that area. This defense did a good job playing three down in front and forced you to take those five and six down carries and see if you are patient enough to do that. Another thing we need to do is work on penalties. We had three false starts and a face mask. Those are the things that hurt you.”
C.J. Stroud, Ohio State quarterback
On the unique defensive scheme Tulsa runs
“They run a 3-3-5, anybody who knows football knows that’s very tough to play against. We already knew coming in there wasn’t going to be easy completions on the field. It was hard to try and get a rhythm going and their defense wants you to snap the ball every play and get 5 (yards), 5 (yards), 5 (yards). You get greedy and that’s how you turn the ball over.”
On the play of TreVeyon Henderson
“We already knew he was special. He has a God-given talent and he put it on display today, showing the nation what he can do. He’s just starting. It was amazing watching him do what he did today, and I think he can do even better.”
On his shoulder injury
“I was healthy enough to play. Definitely not 100 percent, but who is a hundred percent? We have a job to do and have to fix up some things on offense, but wins aren’t easy, especially when everybody has a big target on our name. But we definitely have to get better.”
On Chris Olave’s quiet receiving day
“Both he and Garrett (Wilson) are great receivers and definitely do amazing things, but today I guess it was Garrett’s turn. That’s how our offense works. Chris will bounce back.”
TreyVon Henderson, Ohio State running back
On expectations this early into his career
“I wasn’t expecting something like this but, like I told everyone before, this season I have a lot of big goals for myself and I reached one of my goals today. But I have plenty more, so I just got to keep working.”
On his workload expectations for this week
“It came by surprise. We all worked hard this week, but I wasn’t expecting to get a lot of carries. I ended up getting a lot of carries.
On Archie Griffin
“I have never met him, but I have watched his film a lot. I watch a lot of the past Ohio State running backs. He was a great player – everyone knows Archie was a great player.
On finding out about his start
“I didn’t know until before the game that I was starting. He just told me, I go first.”
On Archie Griffin dubbing him “amazing”
“That’s a blessing and I’m excited right now, but at the same time, I have to keep this going. I can’t just let this be a one time thing, I have to stay hungry. Go back to practice this week coming up, work hard again, and do it again next Saturday.
Cameron Martinez, Ohio State defensive back
On Ronnie Hickman, Cam Brown, and himself getting more comfortable in the defense
“It’s really fun, and something that we always talk about. Us three, its something we talk about too, we see each other every day and envision what plays we can make and what we can do. We have all the confidence in the world to go do that. It’s a great time to be out there with my guys.
Philip Montgomery, Tulsa head coach
On the game
“I’m really proud of the way we played today. We did some good things and gave ourselves some good opportunities. We went toe-to-toe with an exceptional team. It’s been a tough start, but I am encouraged by the way we played today.
“When we’re in those situations when you’re taking chances, you have to be aggressive when you’re not on your homecourt.”
On quarterback Davis Brin
“That dude stepped up and did a nice job. Looking at my history, there are very few times I’ve thrown 55 times the way we did tonight.”
On keeping morale high despite being 0-3
“We still have a lot of football ahead of us. We have a good football team and now we have to focus on getting over the hump. We have to get back on the practice field and get back to work.”
On moral victories
“I’ve never approached our team that way. When we step on the field we want to win. What I want to see our team continue to do is take positive steps forward. Our team is still growing and taking steps to be better.”
