On how Kamryn Babb became captain:
“His work ethic has been off the charts. He had some opportunities in between injuries to make an impact. People idolize the way he lives. It’s always a challenge to do right, to choose right, to be kind, and be thoughtful. He embodies that, he obviously has made a large impact on a large amount of guys. It’s not about going above and beyond., it’s just about being consistent. He is a very consistent man, that operates at a very high level academically, socially, and spiritually.”
On C.J. Stroud as QB:
“I think the most impressive thing with Cj is his calm and his pose. I haven’t seen any rattle from him which is very mature. He is able to hit a throw be happy about it, miss a throw and move on to the next throw and still hold himself accountable. Our job (the wide receivers) is to always be at the right spot, at the right time and be uncovered. CJ has absolutely elevated our game.”
On the offense not going “crazy,” sticking to the basics:
“We need less time. Right now we’ve spent so much time on one opponent that we need to continue to find new things. As coaches, it’s always a challenge to put our players in the best positions to execute. They do a great job on developing as players and it’s our job to use their skill set and put them in proper positions to help them execute. Asking guys to do jobs they can’t do or are disadvantaged to do is a shame on us.”
— Coach Hartline
On maximizing the offense:
“We just have be unselfish. We have so many weapons in the TE room, the RB room and on the outside. We just have to be unselfish, there’s only one ball and we can’t control where it goes. We can just control what we can do for the team. As long as we don’t get in the way of ourselves we’ll be alright. We all came here for one reason and that’s to win the National Championship, we all want to do that and have our minds set on that. We just have to work with each other and keep building through out the season to get better and have fun.”
On Kamryn Babb:
“He’s been through a lot. It’s a huge story, one of the best stories out here. Kam is one of my closest friends, to see him go through all that adversity since I’ve been here and to see him come out a better person is huge to me. Being one of his roommates and seeing him go though all of that sets an example to all of his people and this program. He embraces the adversity and it was tough for me seeing him and his family go through all that hurt but he loves the game of football and just wants to better everyday. He’s in the trainer room not complaining at all, he’s still leading off the field. He’s a big captain for our team.”
— Chris Olave
“This year is about team success, even though we’ve already had that with Big Ten championships and the semi-final championship last year, we want to take that to the next step and get to the National Championship and bring it home. My job is just playing my role and contributing to the team success.” — Garrett Wilson
On being captain:
“I’m thankful I can leave my mark on guys and just be there and support and to be the captain that I need to be. That’s my goal, just being vocal. Whether that’s on the sidelines, talking to Chris or Garrett or anyone I see and just being supportive and being there. Just being a voice and stepping out of my comfort zone. I think that’s the biggest challenge for me is that even though I haven’t played, what I can I say to motivate and inspire guys and how can I lead with my actions as well.”
On tearing his ACL four times and not giving up:
“It was kind of unbelievable. I felt so good and nobody has really been able to see what I can do. After the third time I thought, ‘Maybe it’s time to wrap it up?’ But again I feel really good for someone who has torn four ACLs you wouldn’t being able to tell. That’s all praise and glory to God for me being able to move, run and do the things that I do. I still think that I can still play at a very high level.”
— Kamryn Babb
On the bonds within the team:
“We have such a good brotherhood here, especially in the wide receiver room. It’s Zone Six versus everybody. We all just root for each other and everyone is excited to get their opportunities and capitalize off of everything they can. Everyone hypes each other up when someone makes a play.”
On his motivation after injury:
“I’m very motivated just to get out there and show what I’ve improved on. It’s going to be different with a full operational shoulder (laughs) but I’m just excited and I’ve been trying to work my butt off in anyway that I can.”
— Julian Fleming
