
Ohio State Heads to Winston-Salem for Opening Round of NCAA Tournament

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State men’s tennis is headed out in the road for the opening round of the NCAA Tournament this weekend. The Buckeyes will take on VCU in the first round in Winston-Salem, N.C. Wake Forest is the host and will play South Carolina State in the other first round match.
The matches will be played Friday and Saturday, May 7 & 8 at the Wake Forest Tennis Center. Ohio State and VCU will play at 2:00 p.m. on Friday followed by Wake Forest and SC State at 5 p.m. The winners will meet on Saturday at 5 p.m.
This is the 21st time the Buckeyes have been selected for the NCAA Championship with every appearance coming under the direction of head coach Ty Tucker. They have an overall record of 56-20 with a pair of runner-up finishes in 2009 and 2018.
This is the first time since 2005 that Ohio State will head out on the road for the first and second round matches. The Buckeyes had hosted the opening rounds the previous 14 tournaments. In 2005, Ohio State went to College Station, Texas for the first two rounds. Ohio State has advanced past the opening weekend of the NCAA Tournament 16 times in its previous 20 appearances and has won at least one match in every year but one.
VCU swept its way through the Atlantic 10 Championship to earn the conference’s automatic bid. The Rams are 17-4 on the year and own a win over then No. 17 Arizona State on March 12 in Tempe. Wake Forest played a full schedule, going 28-6 so far this season and are the No. 10 overall in the tournament. The Demon Deacons beat Duke in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament but fell in the semis to North Carolina. SC State won the MEAC title two weeks ago to earn its way to the dance. The Bulldogs are just 7-5 on the year.
Ohio State is 20-3 on the season and won the Big Ten East Division title. This past weekend, they made a run to the finals of the Big Ten Tournament and lost a heart-breaking 4-3 match to Illinois.
