COLUMBUS, Ohio – One game from a Big Ten championship and the NCAA championships. The Ohio State field hockey team's terrific run the second half of this season – seven wins in eight matches – propelled them to the championship game of the Big Ten tournament where it finally ended with a 4-0 loss to No. 1 seed Michigan Saturday afternoon at Grant Field in Iowa City, Iowa.

Led by Big Ten offensive player of the year Mackenzie Allessie, Ohio State erased an 0-7 start to the season behind four- and three-game winning streaks, including overtime wins in the Big Ten tourney over Penn State and Northwestern to get to the title game.

The match was scoreless after the first quarter but the Wolverines, now 13-2 on the season, scored early in the second on a goal by Lora Clark to take a 1-0 lead.

Less than five minutes later Halle O'Neill scored to make it 2-0 and the Wolverines' confidence soared as they were 9-0 this season when it scored two or more goals.

The lead grew to 3-0 with 20 seconds left in the half off a goal by Sofia Southam.

Michigan's defense, which has allowed just two goals in its last 10 games, made sure that lead held up. The Buckeyes averaged 14 shots per game this season but managed just six shots today. UM also held a 5-4 advantage in penalty corners.

O'Neill scored her second of the game early in the fourth quarter to complete the scoring.

The Buckeyes finish their 2021 season with a 7-9 record.
