COLUMBUS, Ohio – For the fourth time this season, Ohio State swept Michigan State, winning 7-0 Friday afternoon at the Auer Tennis Complex.
Playing outdoors at home for the first time since May 11, 2019, the Buckeyes (17-2) took the doubles point and then grinded their way to six singles victories. The win sets up a matchup on Sunday with No. 7 Michigan and the Big Ten East title will be on the line. If Ohio State wins, the teams will share the 2021 East Division crown.
The Buckeyes took the doubles point quickly with a 6-0 win from Cannon Kingsley and JJ Tracy on court three and then John McNally and Robert Cash won 6-1 on court one.
Michigan State pushed back a little in singles. Tracy continued his solid run of 21 consecutive victories with a 6-1, 6-2 win and then Kyle Seelig made it 3-0 with his 6-2, 6-3 win on court five. The clinching point came from Trotter with a 6-1, 7-5 victory on court three.
McNally claimed his 19th victory of the season with a 6-3, 6-3 win on court one over Nick Williams. Boulais won 6-3 in his first set with Anthony Pero and then battled his way to a 9-7 victory in a second-set tiebreak to put the sixth point on the board.
Cannon Kingsley didn’t have his A game on Friday but like all top players do, he grinded his way to a three-set victory to keep a perfect sheet on the season. The Northport, N.Y. native bested Carson Gates 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 to improve to 24-0.
The Buckeyes will look to avenge one of their two losses this season when it hosts the Wolverines on Sunday afternoon.
