COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State field hockey team couldn't put a goal past Rutgers goalkeeper Gianna Glatz and the Scarlet Knights made their one goal stand up in a 1-0 victory over the Buckeyes Sunday afternoon in Virginia Beach, Va.
Ohio State put seven shots on goal, including five in a first period played almost entirely in the Rutgers defensive end, but couldn't find the back of the goal for the second consecutive game this weekend. Mackenzie Allessie led the way for Ohio State with three shots on goal with four others contributing one apiece.
There was no score at halftime. The Buckeyes controlled the run of play in the first period and the effort contributed to four penalty corners. Glatz stopped two of them directly and two others were thwarted by the Rutgers defense.
There were no real scoring opportunities by either team in the second period.
Rutgers scored early in the third period, at the 13:25 mark, on a goal by Bridy Molyneaux, a deflected shot along the right post after the Scarlet Knights' first and only penalty corner of the game. The assist went to Milena Redlingshoefer.
Each team managed just one more shot on goal the rest of the game as both teams played an aggressive defensive game. Ohio State had one penalty corner in the third period and five for the game.
Ohio State drops to 0-3 on the season with all three games played in Virginia Beach. Rutgers is now 3-1.
Ohio State is off next weekend and resumes action March 19 and 21 with a pair of games against undefeated Iowa in Columbus.
