Buckeyes Post 8-3 Win over Sun Devils

COLUMBUS, Ohio – With points from 12 players, including four-point nights by Mark Cheremeta, Jaedon Leslie and Travis Treloar, the Ohio State men's hockey team defeated Arizona State, 8-3, Thursday in Value City Arena. The Buckeyes led 3-0 after the first period and 5-2 entering the third, outscoring the Sun Devils 3-1 in the last 20 minutes. Treloar had two goals and two assists, while Cheremeta and Leslie both had a goal and three assists.
The teams will close the series and the regular season at 5:30 p.m. Friday in Value City Arena. The game will be streamed through BTN Plus and on Ohio State Radio. The six members of the Buckeye senior class – Eugene Fadyeyev, Grant Gabriele, Evan Moyse, Tommy Nappier, Collin Peters and Austin Pooley – will be recognized pregame, with the ceremony on facebook.com/OhioStateMensHockey and on OhioStateBuckeyes.com starting about 5:05 p.m.

"We talked a lot as a group to try to get out there, get a quick start and try to play with a lead. Certainly we hadn't done that in a while. It almost takes some of the pressure off you. We still made some mistakes against a good hockey team but it was nice to score a few goals."

Ohio State vs. Arizona State
In the First … Buckeye defenseman CJ Regula opened the scoring at 5:50, scoring over the goalie's shoulder from in close, set up by Collin Peters and Austin Pooley. At 8:15 Travis Treloar scored off a pass from Mark Cheremeta, with Jaedon Leslie also assisting. The Buckeyes then added a shorthanded goal. Pooley blocked a shot and he and Treloar turned it into a 2-on-1. Treloar's shot was tipped by Pooley in front for a 3-0 Buckeye lead at 11:48. Ohio State outshot Arizona State, 11-9, in the period.
In the Second … Arizona State got on the board just 36 seconds into the period. Ohio State scored the next two, with Gustaf Westlund tipping a Cheremeta shot on the power play at 3:06, also assisted by Grant Gabriele, and Cheremeta scoring a goal of his own, assisted by Leslie, at 6:41. The Sun Devils tallied at 16:01 for a 5-2 Buckeye lead through two. Ohio State had the shot advantage, 12-8, in the period.
In the Third … Just 1:38 into the third Kamil Sadlocha backhanded the puck in over the ASU goalie, picking up the rebound of a Tate Singleton shot. Ryan O'Connell also assisted on the goal. Treloar notched his second of the night at 3:04, again assisted by Cheremeta and Leslie. Leslie scored one of his own at 6:05, taking a pass from Evan McIntyre, with the second assist from Treloar. The final goal came from ASU at 6:12. The Sun Devils had the shot advantage, 11-10.
Shots … Ohio State outshot Arizona State, 33-28, in the game. Tommy Nappier made 25 saves in 59:56 for the Buckeyes. Two ASU goalies combined for 25 saves.
Special Teams … Ohio State was 1-for-4 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.
Buckeye This and That … Treloar leads the Buckeyes with eight goals and 20 points, while Cheremeta is first with 14 assists and second with 19 points … the eight goals were a season high for the Buckeyes … Nappier's win was the 40th of his career, moving into ninth alone all-time for the Buckeyes … with four points, Treloar had his sixth career multiple point game and first with more than two points; it was his second career two-goal game and third two-assist outing … Leslie had his first multiple point outing as a Buckeye with a goal and three assists (his first helpers of the year) … Cheremeta had his first career three-assist game after three games with two helpers; the four points surpassed the three he had at Notre Dame Dec. 13 … Treloar and Leslie both were +5 in the win, with Cheremeta +4 … Pooley, with a goal and an assist, had his second career multiple point game after a three-point night in January.
