3/2/2021 8:12:17 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
Heading into the final games of the regular season this week, the six members of the Ohio State men’s hockey Class of 2021 will be highlighted. The group has been a part of a Big Ten regular season title, NCAA Frozen Four trip and two NCAA Tournament appearances (along with a probable third straight trip in 2020 before the season was ended because of the COVID pandemic).
The Buckeyes host Arizona State in Value City Arena at 5:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, with the games streamed through BTN Plus and on Ohio State Radio.
Team captain Austin Pooley, from Dublin, Ohio, is up next.
Pooley is a Senior CLASS Award finalist this season. He has been voted a two-time captain for the Buckeyes by his teammates, as an alternate captain as a junior and wearing the C as a senior, the first Central Ohio native to be a captain for the Buckeye men’s hockey team.
A forward, he has missed just three games in his four years with the team and has 10 goals, 15 assists and 25 points in 134 career games. The finance major is scheduled to graduate this spring. Pooley is a two-time AHCA Scholar All-American, a two-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and a three-time Ohio State Scholar Athlete.
Q&A with Austin Pooley
What is your favorite memory (or memories) as a Buckeye (so far)?
Going to the NCAA Frozen Four, winning the Big Ten regular season Championship and sweeping Wisconsin in the first round of the Big Ten playoffs last year.
What advice would you give to younger Buckeyes?
Take advantage of all the resources Ohio State has to offer. Build and cherish the relationships you make with teammates, coaches, faculty, students and fans. If you do it right you will have some of those relationships for the rest of your life. I challenge you to put others before yourself as you will find more fulfillment and joy in your life. This will help you grow more than if you only cared about your own interests. Lastly, don’t take anything for granted. Utilize every day and burn it out!
Any plans for the future, outside of playing hockey?
When I retire from hockey I want to work in investment banking or wealth management for a big bank.
What does it mean to be a Buckeye?
Being a Buckeye means striving for excellence in all areas of your life. Having the conviction and passion to become the best version of yourself while making those around you better. It means leaving the university better then you found it. A Buckeye puts others needs before their own and looks for ways to contribute to the community. I am truly blessed to have been able to live out my dream to be a Buckeye and play hockey at this prestigious university.
How do you think you’ve changed from freshman year to now?
I have grown in all areas of my life. I have become a better person, hockey player, teammate, student, leader, brother, son and mentor over the past four years. I have made so many tremendous relationships that will last for the rest of my life.

The Pooley name is a powerful one when it comes to Buckeye hockey. First Paul and Perry, now Austin.
The latter has a lot to live up to, and the family legacy is not lost on him.
