COLUMBUS, Ohio – An exciting day of competition at the 2021 NCAA women’s swimming and diving championships took place Thursday at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, N.C., and when the evening finals had ended: Ohio State had an additional six more All-Americans and were resting in the Top 5 of the team standings with 101.5 points and in fifth place.
That success so far is because all four individual events – 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley, 50 freestyle and 1-meter diving – had a Buckeye or Buckeyes competing and scoring points, and both relays featured nationally-rated teams from Ohio State.
So there was strength in Ohio State’s numbers, but there was also quality in those numbers as three individuals advanced out of a fine morning preliminary round into evening finals:
- Junior Sally Tafuto earned her second All-America honor of 2021, swimming in the championship final of the 500 freestyle and finishing seventh with a time of 4:40.29.
- Senior Kristen Romano made the finals in the 200 individual medley and swam to an eighth-place finish in 1:56.07. She joins Tafuto with an individual first-team All-America honor.
- Senior Taylor Petrak sprinted into the B Finals of the 50 freestyle and finished in a tie for 15th overall in 22.35 to earn All-America honors of the honorable mention quality.
The relay teams were outstanding. The 200 freestyle relay of Petrak, freshman Katherine Zenick, sophomore Amy Fulmer and senior Freya Rayner took fifth overall in 1:27.77 to earn a big 28 team points and first-team All-America honors for the four.
And the 400 medley relay team placed seventh with the team of junior Emily Crane, sophomore Hannah Bach, Zenick and Petrak swimming to a 3:30.22 time and four more All-America honors.
Those competing for Ohio State Thursday included: freshman Maya Geringer (29th in the 500 free in 4:46.00), senior Katie Trace (27th in the 200 IM in 1:58.07), senior Hanna Gresser (42 in the 200 IM in 1:59.25) and four more swimmers in the 50 free: freshman Katherine Zenick (34th in 22.47), sophomore Amy Fulmer (41st in 22.61), junior Emily Crane (48th in 22.78) and freshman Catherine Russo (54th in 22.90).
The championships continue Friday with seven more events.
