
Nine Buckeyes Named to CSCAA List of 100 Greatest Swimmers & Divers

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The College Swimming & Diving Association of America (CSCAA) announced Tuesday its list of 100 Greatest Swimmers & Divers of the past century, which includes 10 Buckeyes. Overall, six divers and four swimmers from Ohio State earned the recognition.
Of the contingent of Buckeyes named to the honor, nine were members of the men’s team. Ohio State’s Al Patnik, Bruce Harlan, Lou Vitucci, Miller Anderson and Tim Moore are five of fourteen divers named to the list. Bill Smith, Ford Konno, Keo Nakama and Yoshi Oyakawa are among the other 86 swimmers to be selected.
Representing the women’s team is Carrie Irish, who is one of thirteen divers selected to the women’s list.
Buckeyes Named to CSCAA 100 Greatest Swimmers & Divers
Al Patnik
- Three-time NCAA Champion in the one-meter dive and two-time national champion in the three-meter dive
- Won three conference titles in fancy diving for the Buckeyes in 1938, 1939 and 1940
Bill Smith
- Won four NCAA Championships in the 200 Free (1943, 47, 48, 49)
- Three-time national champion in the 500 Free
- Lettered for the Buckeyes in 1943, 1947, 1948, and 1949
Bruce Harlan
- Five-time national and conference champion, winning three titles in the one-meter dive and two in the three-meter dive
- Four-time All-American for the Ohio State diving team
- 1950 Big Ten Medal of Honor recipient
Carrie Irish
- Only one of four Buckeye divers to earn All-America laurels four times in her career
- A seven-time champion, competing on both the one- and three-meter boards
- Posted an undefeated campaign in 1975 en route to claiming AIAW and Big Ten titles in the one- and three-meter
- Three-meter Big Ten champion in 1978 and 1979
Ford Konno
- Freestyle All-American from 1952-55
- Three-time NCAA Champion in the 500 and 1,500 free
- Two-time conference champion in the 220 Free, three-time conference champion in the 440 Free and four-time conference champion in the 1,500 Free
Keo Nakama
- Two-time NCAA champion in the 500 and 1,500 Free and freestyle All-American for the Buckeyes
- Three-time conference champion in the 220 and 440 Free
Lou Vitucci
- 1962 and ’63 NCAA Champion in the one-meter dive and 1961 national champion in the three-meter dive
- Conference champion in the one-meter board in 1961 and three-meter champion in 1961 and 1963
Miller Anderson
- Five- time NCAA champion, winning two one-meter titles and three three-meter
- 1946 Fancy Diving conference champion
- Won conference championships in the one- and three-meter dive in 1948
Tim Moore
- Three-time NCAA Champion in the one-meter (1973-75) and two-time national champion in the three-meter (’73, ’75)
- Four-time conference champion in the one-meter dive (’72-75) and three-time champion in the three-meter dive (’73-75)
Yoshi Oyakawa
- Three-time NCAA champion in the 100 Back (1953-55)
- Four-time 200 Back national champion (1952-55)
- Member of the 1953, 1954, and 1955 national championship winning 300 Medley Relay team
- Three-time 100 and 200 Back conference champion
