COLUMBUS, Ohio – This weekend, the No. 2 Ohio State women’s hockey team meets St. Thomas on the road for the first meeting between the two teams in St. Paul, Minn. The Buckeyes and Tommies face off Friday and Saturday, Nov. 5-6 from the Saint Thomas Ice Arena.
Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. ET on Friday and 3 p.m. ET Saturday. Both games will be streamed on B1G+ (additional subscription required).
Buckeyes in a Nutshell
- With two wins against St. Cloud State last weekend, the Buckeyes hold on to the top spot in the league with 10 wins against WCHA opponents and one overtime loss for 25 points.
- The Buckeyes continue to be rated second in the latest edition of the USCHO and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls. It is the fourth consecutive week that Ohio State has been ranked No. 2.
- Senior defender Sophie Jaques earned two WCHA honors this week, picking up her second WCHA Defender of the Week honor of the season and the conference’s first Defender of the Month accolade of the year. Jaques put on a five-point performance against St. Cloud State last weekend, scoring two power play goals for Ohio State and finishing the second game of the series with a career-high tying three points and two goals. The player of the month nod is the sixth for the Buckeyes all-time and Jaques becomes the fourth Buckeye to earn the honor.
- Jenna Buglioni and Jenn Gardiner lead the Buckeyes with 10 assists on the year. The duo ranks third in the conference and seventh nationally in assists per game (1.00).
- With the sweep of St. Cloud State, Ohio State remains unbeaten at home this season. The Buckeyes have met three opponents at the OSU Ice Rink this season for a 6-0 record on home ice.
Notable Notes
- Gabby Rosenthal paces the Buckeyes with eight goals on the year. In the team’s last outing, the senior scored one goal and added two assists for her second three-point game of the season.
- Jenn Gardiner has scored a team-high 16 points this year on ten assists and six goals. The Surrey, B.C. native has scored two game winning goals this season for the Buckeyes, good for fifth nationally. She also ranks top 10 in the nation in points per game (1.60).
- Improving to 28-28 on the penalty kill with six PKs against St. Cloud State, the Buckeyes are now one of two teams across the country with a perfect record in the man-down situations.
- Ohio State ranks top three nationally in several other stat lines, including a nation-leading scoring defense (0.20) and third place ranks in assist (73), goals (45), power play goals (8), power-play percentage (0.320), scoring margin (3.20), scoring offense (4.50) and team points (118).
- Hitting the road for the third time this season, the Buckeyes hold a 2-2-0 away record on the year. The last two road matchups for Ohio State were against top five ranked teams in then-ranked No. 4/5 Minnesota and No. 1 Wisconsin.
- With six of the eight WCHA teams located in Minnesota, Ohio State makes its second of six regular season trips to Minnesota this weekend.
Milestone and Record Book Watch
- With a point in every game this season, Buglioni sits at seventh in the Buckeye record book with a point streak of 10 games for a total of 15 points. Hokey Langan is sixth with an 11-game streak totaling 21 points from Feb. 27-Nov.6, 2010.
- Liz Schepers and Emily Curlett are less than 10 points from 100 for their career. With one goal and four assists on the year, Schepers sits at 94 career points as a Buckeye. Curlett, who has recorded one goal and three assists in her first season at Ohio State, has amassed 95 career points with 91 from her time at Robert Morris.
- With 13 points on the year, Jaques is eight points away from putting her name in the record book for career points by a defenseman. She currently ranks seventh among all-time Buckeyes with 46 career points by a defenseman against WCHA opponents.
- Andrea Braendli has played 369:40 minutes this season between the pipes for Ohio State, bringing her career WCHA minutes to 3,430:53. The total brings her to sixth in the Buckeye record book in conference minutes played.
History vs. St. Thomas
- This weekend marks the first time that St. Thomas will host the Buckeyes in series history.
- The matchup will be just the second meeting between the two teams in all-time series, as the Buckeyes faced the Tommies in their first Division I games in the 2021-22 season opener.
- Ohio State swept St. Thomas in the inaugural series, winning the first game, 6-0, and the second, 4-1.
Around the WCHA
- Cloud State hosts Minnesota State and Wisconsin hosts Bemidji State to round out WCHA teams in action this weekend.
- Five teams from the conference are ranked in this week’s national polls, as Wisconsin, Ohio State and Minnesota own the top three spots in both the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine and USCHO polls. Minnesota Duluth sits at sixth in both polls and Minnesota State is receiving votes in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll.
Captaining the Buckeyes
- Paetyn Levis, Gabby Rosenthal and Liz Schepers captain the Buckeyes this season. Schepers will don the captain’s C while Levis and Rosenthal will serve as alternate captains.
- Schepers is a two-time captain as she was also named captain for the 2020-21 campaign.
- Levis and Rosenthal are in their senior seasons while Schepers is a graduate student and playing her fifth season for the Buckeyes.
