Ohio State 59, Purdue 31
November 13, 2021
Ohio Stadium — 101,009
Ohio State head coach Ryan Day
On the game…
“I think it was a good win in November against a team that was dangerous. We came out early, played well, created some turnovers and certainly made a lot of plays in the perimeter. In the run game, I thought we moved the line of scrimmage. It’s certainly something we’ve spent some time talking about as an offense. Finishing drives in the red zone, it’s always something we talk about a lot but the last couple weeks have been a point of emphasis, so that was well done across the board.”
On the team’s next few games…
“It is going to be a challenge. They are both very good teams. Michigan State’s coming in here and we have to get back to playing consistent football. That’s what it is in November. This is a typical November game in the Big Ten. It’s the wind, it’s cold, and so that’s what we got to do. The best teams play well in November.”
On the team’s performance against Purdue…
“We dropped eight a lot. With a three-man rush, you’re not always going to get as many. That’s the decision that’s made and I think, again, we’ll learn from it and figure out if it’s efficient or not. But certainly, you don’t want to give up 31 points in a game. I think when you look at the last couple of weeks, when the offense hasn’t been exactly stellar, the defense played really, really well. In this game, we score 59 points on offense, and the defense gave up 31. So, the good news is that you know, we’re kind of helping each other out, but we’re still looking for that complete game. We’ve had some complete games, but that’s that’s part of winning football in November. Bringing it every week. You have to help each other out. There were still a lot of good plays. Creating the turnover was huge. But, again, different style and a lot to learn from.”
Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud
On completing 82% of his passes…
“Credit to the o-line; our tackles did a good job. In practice we put on lot of emphasis on stopping their d-line. When you have the time and confidence to step into your throws you can do that stuff.”
On having Garrett Wilson back…
“You want a guy like Garrett out there. He’s a great player to have. His routes speak for himself – he gets open time in and time out. Last week, the younger players stepped up well, but it’s great to have G5 (Garrett Wilson) out there.”
On his preparation…
“As the leader of the offense and one of the leaders on the team, it’s my job to be prepared. I go to [the receivers] throughout the week to tell them what I saw. Sometimes it happens in the game. Being prepared puts us above the other team. My job is to sit back there and deliver the ball, and I can’t do that if I’m not prepared.”
Ohio State receiver Garrett Wilson
On his first game back since playing against Penn State…
“Honestly, I just came out here and did what I love doing. I missed last week not being able to be out there with my brothers and to come back and be able to go out there on offense and have the game I had, it feels good for sure.”
On his versatility…
“I feel very confident with the ball in my hands. I’ve always had the ball in my hands so, again, I’m just doing what I love and it’s fun to be out there for sure. Running into the end zone with Buckeye Nation cheering is definitely exhilarating.”
Ohio State linebacker Cody Simon
On facing a pass-heavy offense…
“They’re a really good team and a really good offense. [Purdue’s] quarterback is really talented and for us the job is to keep the ball in front and try to play another down. I commend all of our guys who played super hard. We’re fortunate enough to get a win out of this and move on.”
Ohio State safety Bryson Shaw
On the matchup against Purdue’s David Bell…
“Guarding a receiver like that at such a young age, there’s going to be improvement. The lessons you learn from that are drastic and I thought Denzel [Burke] played really great. You look at the stat sheet, 11 tackles, that’s huge for us. For Denzel, a corner like that, to come up and make some tackles, that’s awesome. I thought he did a good job on David [Bell]. David’s a great player, he’s going to make his plays and Denzel made some plays as well.”
Purdue head coach Jeff Brohm
On Ohio State…
“They were hitting on all cylinders today, they’re a playoff caliber team. They outplayed us, outmanned us, and beat us in every category. They easily have a chance to win it all.”
On improving as a team…
“They were really good, and we’ve got to understand in order to continue to improve that’s the standard right there for high caliber football and they showed it today.”
On Ohio State’s playmaking ability…
“Everyone knows Ohio State has a ton of talent, their line is sensational, their quarterback is really good, they got skill guys all across the board, running backs as well, if they want to pass every play they can, if they want to run every play they can and still go down and score.”
