Fencing Leadership Team Chosen for 2021-22

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State fencing program has chosen its team captains and squad leaders for the 2021-22 campaign. The selections have been part of team, squad and individual championships throughout their careers, as well as garnered numerous academic accolades.
Julieta Toledo will serve as the Buckeyes’ overall team captain and as the captain of the women’s team. For the men, Jadon Montgomery, Roscoe Swartz and Nathan Wriedt were chosen as co-captains.
Each weapon squad has two leaders as well. For foil, Camilla Rivano and Diego Cervantes were chosen. Montserrat Viveros and Bence Bende will lead the epee squad and Steph Miller and Stephen Chou will guide the sabre group.
Team Captains
Julieta Toledo, a junior from Tijuana, Mexico, has earned First Team All-America accolades and an MFC individual sabre title and was an NCAA qualifier in 2020. Last year the film studies major was 31-5 to lead the sabre squad and she garnered USFCA All-Academic Team honors. Toledo competed in the Olympic Trials in Summer 2021 and fenced in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
Jadon Montgomery, a junior sabre fencer from Lewis Center, Ohio, was the 2021 Big Ten Sportsmanship Award winner for the men’s fencing squad. An Ohio State Scholar-Athlete and Academic All-Big Ten selection, the marketing major has been a Bucks Go Pro 2.0 intern.
A senior from Ridgewood, N.J., Roscoe Swartz is a two-time NCAA qualifier in sabre. He was a 2020 First Team All-American and MFC champion and earned First Team All-MFC accolades twice. He is a USFCA Scholar of Distinction and two-time Ohio State Scholar-Athlete, Academic All-Big Ten selection and B1G Distinguished Scholar as a neuroscience major.
Nathan Wriedt, a senior and native of South Beloit, Ill., was the 2019 MFC foil champion. He is a two-time NCAA qualifier and First Team All-MFC honoree. A material science and engineering major, he has garnered USFCA All-Academic Team, Academic All-Big Ten and an Ohio State Scholar-Athlete honors.
Squad Leaders
Foil
Camilla Rivano, a fifth-year senior from Rapallo, Italy, is a three-time Second Team All-American, NCAA qualifier and MFC Champion who has two Top 6 finishes at the NCAA Championships. The hospitality management major has earned Academic All-Big Ten and Ohio State Scholar-Athlete honors.
A 2020 Olympian, Diego Cervantes is a sophomore for the Buckeyes. He was a MFC champion and Honorable Mention All-American in 2020, earning First Team All-MFC accolades. This past summer Cervantes, an economics major, finished first at the 2021 Pan American Zonal Olympic Qualifier.
Epee
Montserrat Viveros, a native of Asuncion, Paraguay, is a junior at Ohio State. She was the recipient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award for the Ohio State women in 2021 and has earned Academic All-Big Ten, Ohio State Scholar-Athlete and USFCA All-Academic Team honors as a marketing major. She earned First Team All-America and All-MFC accolades as a freshman when she was an NCAA qualifier. Viveros competed in the Olympic qualifying meet this past summer.
A native of Gyöngyösfalu, Hungary, Bence Bende is a junior for the Buckeyes. The biology major is a two-time Ohio State Scholar-Athlete and an Academic All-B1G pick, as well as a 2021 Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and USFCA Scholar of Distinction. He earned First Team All-America accolades in 2020 and was an NCAA qualifier, finishing as runner-up at the MFC Championships to earn first team all-conference accolades.
Sabre
Steph Miller, a senior and Commack, N.Y., native, is a two-time Honorable Mention All-MFC selection with two Top 10 finishes at the conference championships. She is a journalism major and three-time Ohio State Scholar-Athlete and two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree, as well as a USFCA All-Academic Team selection.
Stephen Chou, who hails from Upper Saddle River, N.J., is a junior this year and has earned Second Team All-MFC honors. A computer and information science major, Chou is a two-time Ohio State Scholar-Athlete honoree, an Academic All-Big Ten selection and a USFCA All-Academic Team pick.
Both the Buckeye men’s and women’s squads are 5-0 on the year after sweeping their matchups Sunday at the OSU Duals. Ohio State will be back in action at the Penn State Open Nov. 6-7 before hosting the Elite Invitational Dec. 4-5 in French Field House in Columbus.
