
Cantos Siemers Selected ITA Player of the Week

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Irina Cantos Siemers, a sophomore on the No. 9 Ohio State women’s tennis team, has been named the UTR ITA Player of the Week, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced Thursday. Cantos Siemers, from Barcelona, Spain, posted three wins to help the Buckeyes advance to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship.
Playing court two for the Buckeyes, Cantos Siemers, ranked 78th, posted a three-set win over No. 11-ranked Natasha Subhash of Virginia, tying the team score at two en route to a 4-2 Buckeye victory Sunday. In singles Saturday, Cantos Siemers led No. 121 Viktoriya Kanapatskaya of Syracuse, 6-2, 4-4, when the Buckeyes clinched the 4-0 team victory and her match was suspended.
In doubles, Cantos Siemers and Lucia Marzal were 2-0 during ITA Kickoff Weekend in the new Ty Tucker Tennis Center in Columbus. Against Syracuse, the Buckeye duo topped Miranda Ramirez and Zeynep Erman on court three, 6-3, to clinch the doubles point. The Scarlet and Gray tandem notched the first doubles win for the Buckeyes against Virginia, defeating Hibah Shaikh and Amber O’Dell, 6-2, on court three and helping set up the all-important doubles point for the Buckeyes.
This season, Cantos Siemers is 4-0 in singles, with three wins at the Michigan Invitational.
The Buckeyes will return to action Feb. 5-7 at the eight-team ITA National Team Indoor Championship in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Ohio State is making a trip to National Indoors for the fifth time in the last six years and this will be its sixth appearance overall.
