Defense: Linebackers and Tight Ends
Al Washington, Linebackers Coach
On the mentality of being a second string:
It’s a culture deal and a brotherhood deal. We want to win a national championship. It’s less, “I’m a two.” It’s “I’m ready to roll,” and “I am another piece that can help us win a championship.” That’s the message we are preaching. Our culture and maturity is excellence, and it has a lot to do with these older guys.
Jake Hausmann, TE
On the freshman:
Coming in early with a lot of guys that are in the same situation as yours is huge. You get a sense of what it’s like before everyone else does. You’re definitely a step up. The freshman receivers are standing out. When we are in meetings, they are speaking up and know the answers. They’re locked in and obviously making a lot of plays.
Justin Hilliard, LB
On being a leader:
That’s one of the cooler things about coming back. I have been here so long and I have seen what it takes for the guys to play at the next level or even play for a national championship. I feel like I have such a wide range of knowledge that these younger guys are picking up on and I can help them.
Jeremy Ruckert, TE
On what he wants to work on this spring:
I think the main thing I’m looking to work on this spring is really understanding defense, coverage, front and all that. I kind of know the offense being my third year, so I’m starting to get the techniques down. This year I want to take a step forward and identifying the defense, figuring out what I see before the play and during.
Luke Farrell, TE
On being a leader:
I try to do right and be accountable with myself. I’m trying to take that next step and bring somebody like Cade with me and help them out. I have had plenty of examples to follow, even the past few years like Johnny Dixon, Parris Campbell, all those guys are great examples.
