Dunne and Maltais Earn WCHA Player of the Month Honors

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State women’s ice hockey players Jincy Dunne and Emma Maltais were named Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) players of the month, conference officials announced Wednesday. Dunne, a redshirt senior from O’Fallon, Mo. was named Defenseman of the Month while Maltais, a junior from Burlington, Ontario was named Forward of the Month.
In January, the No. 5 Buckeyes posted a 6-1-0 record while outscoring their opponents, 31-12. Dunne anchored the defense with seven points from one goal and six assists while blocking nine shots. She posted two, multi assist games against Minnesota State and Bemidji State and scored a power play goal in the 8-4 victory over the Mavericks. She dished out assists on two power play goals and on the game-winning goal against No. 1 Minnesota. For the month, Dunne was ranked second in the conference for defensive points and defensive assists. Overall, Dunne is second on the team in defensive points (20) and defensive assists (18) and is tied for first for defensive goals (6). She also leads the team with 57 blocked shots.
This is Dunne’s first Defenseman of the Month honor of the year and the second of her career. She also received the WCHA Rookie of the Month honor as a freshman and the WCHA Defenseman of the Week honor earlier this season.
Maltais posted a team-high 14 points from 11 assists and three goals last month. Two of her goals included a power play goal and a short-handed goal. She is now tied for third in Buckeye history with Natalie Spooner with three career short-handed goals. Maltais tallied a team-high four points in the 6-0 win over Minnesota State with a goal and three assists. She posted a three point game the next day with her short-handed goal and two assists. Last weekend, Maltais netted two goals and dished out two assists against Bemidji for a team-high four points on the weekend. She also scored the lone shootout goal in game two to clinch the extra league point. Her final point of the weekend put her at 129 career points, good for sixth in Buckeye history. In January, Maltais led the league in points (14), assists (11), assists per game (1.57), points per game (2.00), and shorthanded goals (1).
This is Maltais’ first Forward of the Month honor this year and second of her career. She also received the WCHA Rookie of the Month honor as a freshman and has received the WCHA Forward of the Week honor twice this season
