COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State's senior night didn't go as planned as league-leading Northwestern pulled away down the stretch for a 69-55 victory on Tuesday evening.
Dorka Juhasz led the way for the Buckeyes as she put up her seventh double-double of the season and the 19th of her career with 15 points and 12 rebounds. This was also her third consecutive game with a double-double.
Freshman Rebeka Mikulasikova had a strong performance with 12 points. Nine of her 12 points were from beyond the arc where she shot an efficient 3-of-4. Fellow freshman Jacy Sheldon also chipped-in with 12 points.
Aaliyah Patty added six points and four rebounds while Braxtin Miller had seven points on the evening.
Juhasz had an outstanding start to the game as she scored the first seven points. The competition was tight on both ends in the first quarter which ended with the Buckeyes on top 19-17.
Ohio State was tested in the second quarter where Northwestern had a strong shooting performance. The Wildcats shot 65.2 percent from the field to Ohio State's 42.9 percent. After a series of possessions coming back empty handed, the Buckeyes found themselves down 36-33 at the half.
Northwestern came out hot after halftime where they quickly increased their lead to seven points in the first few minutes. The Buckeyes responded strong as they cut the lead to three and were led by Juhasz who forced two fouls in the paint and scored three quick layups. However, they still found themselves down 56-45 going into the fourth after Northwestern scored multiple shots from beyond the arc, one of which banked in at the buzzer.
Unable to overcome the defensive efforts of the Wildcats, Ohio State had a difficult fourth quarter. The Wildcats wore down the Buckeyes and pulled away for a 69-55 victory.
A bright spot in the waning moments came from the Buckeyes only senior, Savitha Jayaraman. She got in the game for the final minute which was her first action of the season.
Ohio State will close out the regular season on the road at Purdue this Saturday. The Boilermakers fell at Maryland on Tuesday evening. The two teams opened the Big Ten season on Dec. 28 and will close it Saturday. Purdue won that meeting, 66-50, inside St. John Arena.
