Athletics Good Stuff
- Congratulations to coach Melissa McGhee and staff as the dance team won the 2020 D1A Jazz National Championship last week at the 2020 Universal Cheer & Dance Association national championships. This marks the program’s fourth title and the last time five Buckeyes will take the Universal Dance floor: Lexi Miehls, Megan Schmidt, Valerie Celentano, Olivia Gutentag and Adriana Pierleoni. The Buckeyes were second in the Pom category after winning the national title the past two years. The cheerleaders finished fourth in the D1A coed cheer competition.
- The wrestling team came through a tough two-game road swing at No. 1 Iowa and at No. 14 Minnesota with a 1-1 record and is now 8-2 on the year and 4-1 in the Big Ten. The Buckeyes defeated Minnesota last night, 22-13, as Luke Pletcher, Kaleb Romero and Sammy Sasso all had wins over Top 10 opponents. Sasso’s huge weekend included defeating the nation’s No. 1 ranked 149-pounder from Iowa.
- A terrific weekend for the women’s hockey team, which swept Quinnapiac to improve to 16-6-4 on the season. A pair of defensemen – Madison Bizal and Teghan Inglis – scored in the 3-2 Game 2 win withRebecca Freiburger’s third period goal the convincer. Sara Saekkinen and Gabby Rosenthal scored in the 2-1 Game 1 win.
- A big win on the road last night over Northwestern for the men’s basketball team improved the Buckeyes’ record to 13-7 on the season in a strong Big Ten Conference that has just one team with fewer than four overall losses. Frosh D.J. Carton was terrific with 17 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals in 21 minutes.
- The rifle team defeated No. 5 Air Force and UTEP at Converse Hall over the weekend. Rhiann Travis led the way for the Buckeyes with the second-highest aggregate score of the season for a Buckeye (1,174), which included a season’s best 595 air rifle score. Jacob Buchanan had a season’s best 581 smallbore score.
- The women’s gymnastics team defeated Maryland and Central Michigan in a tri-meet this weekend in front of 2,100 fans at the Covelli Center. The Buckeyes took first on all four events: Sydney Jennings(vault), Olivia Aepli and Jenna Swartzentruber (bars), Alexis Hankins (beam) and Claire Gagliardi (floor).
- The men’s and women’s track and field teams competed in the Dr. Sander Invite over the weekend at Columbia University with the women winning the meet. First-place performances for the Buckeyes included Morgan Lewis in the 60-meter hurdles, Anavia Battle in the 60-meter dash, Abby Nichols in the mile and the 4×400-meter relay team consisting of Alyssa Marsh, Jayden Wood, Aziza Ayouband Tamani Wilson.
- The pistol team defeated Akron this weekend in both the open and women’s divisions. Robert Delagrange was first in standard pistol and Samuel Gens was first in air pistol. Katelyn Abeln was first in both open and women’s sport pistol and first in air pistol.
- The swimmers and divers competed at the Notre Dame Invitational this weekend with the women taking second and the men third. Victorious Buckeyes: Amanda Palutsis (50 free), Joseph Canova (1-meter dive) and Jacob Siler (3-meter dive).
- Sophomores Jesse Tyndall and Angel Leon won on floor exercise and high bar, respectively, but the No. 7 men’s gymnasts narrowly missed a win over the defending Big Ten champion Penn State gymnasts, falling in State College, 405.900-405.000.
- Volleyball’s unbeaten streak to open the season and the coaching career of Kevin Burch reached six games with a victory over USC in State College Friday in the Big Ten/Pac-12 Challenge. The roll ended with a four-set loss to UCLA on Saturday. The Buckeyes are now 6-1.
- All the best for a great season for coach Nick Myers and his staff and players as Top 10-ranked men’s lacrosse begins its 68th season this week against Detroit Mercy (Saturday at 7 p.m. at the WHAC) .
- Men’s lacrosse has a program-record nine regular season home games on its schedule this year, including Big Ten contests against No. 1 Penn State, No. 13 Johns Hopkins and Michigan. Other notable non-conference games in Columbus are vs. No. 10 Denver (March 15), No. 7 Notre Dame (March 10) and No. 12 Cornell (March 1). - Tanner Laczynski has tied the Ohio State men’s hockey record with nine career Big Ten Conference “star of the week” honors. His most recent, which tied the nine honors by goalie Christian Frey (2014-17), came in a four-point weekend recently vs. Notre Dame.
- Frosh Samuel Clark was named MIVA Defensive Player of the Week and Off The Block National Freshman of the Week last week after accumulating 10 kills, eight blocks and five digs while attacking at the rare air rate of .769 in two Buckeye volleyball victories.
- Shiori Fukuda was the Big Ten women’s tennis athlete of the week last week after posting singles victories over two ranked opponents and going undefeated in doubles.
- Both tennis teams have advanced to the national indoor championships – the ITA Team Indoor Championships – which will be played in mid-February.
- The 25th-ranked Ohio State women (2-0) defeated No. 10 Oklahoma State and No. 24 Wake Forest over the weekend to advance to the indoor championships in Chicago.
- The No. 6 Ohio State men (7-0) defeated Purdue and Tulsa and will defend their 2019 national team title in Madison, Wisc.
- We’re looking at a “Fab Feb” of home matches for the men’s tennis team. OSU will host No. 2 Texas this weekend, and then No. 25 Arizona State, No. 3 USC and No. 9 Texas A&M in a two-week stretch in February.
- Dorka Juhasz scored 22 points and grabbed a career-high tying 16 rebounds for her 15th double-double, but the women’s basketball team couldn’t pull out another signature win at the Big Ten’s No. 1 team, Iowa, last Thursday.
- The 137th season of Ohio State baseball kicked off Friday with the first full team practice. Head coach Greg Beals is in his 10th season and has led the Buckeyes to the NCAA Regionals in three of the last four years and to Big Ten tournament championships last year and in 2016.
