Athletics Good Stuff
- The women’s hockey team, which opened its season with a sweep of St. Lawrence over the weekend, has named it’s 2019-20 captains: seniors Jincy Dunne and Olivia Soares.
- What an honor! Dunne is a team captain/assistant captain for the third time, placing her in the truly elite of Ohio State student-athlete leaders who have captained a team three times. Two of those very few: QB J.T. Barrett, the only three-time captain in football history, and baseball pitcher and current assistant coach, Dan DeLucia.
- The fencing team had a dominant weekend of competition at French Field house, with both the men and women sweeping their eight opponents Sunday at the OSU Duals. Saturday at the OSU Open, Julieta Toledo (sabre), Alexanne Verret (epee) and Gabriela Cocchini (sabre) all took first place while the men were paced with second-place efforts from Stephen Chou (sabre) and Matthew Comes (epee).
- J.K. Dobbins topped 3,000 career rushing yards this week, just the 10th Buckeye to do so. He’s also featured in a powerful BTN episode of The Journey. Check it out (and start at the beginning of the video; link takes you to the middle): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bv0zWaui_7s&t=328s
- Junior Shiori Fukuda was the runner-up at the USTA Fall Ranked Spotlight tennis tournament in Orlando over the weekend. Fukuda advanced through the 32-player main draw to the title match, where she dropped a three-set decision to defending NCAA champion Estela Perez-Somarriba, of Miami.
- The field hockey team improved to 5-4 on the season with a Big Ten Conference win at Indiana on Sunday, 6-2. The six goals were the most for Ohio State in a Big Ten game in 11 years, or since a 6-0 win over Northwestern in 2008. Jessica Hourihane and Mackenzie Allessie scored two goals apiece in the six-goal second-half.
- More weather issues: Men’s soccer had its match Friday at Northwestern moved to Saturday … it’s fourth weather-related issue of the season. The teams then battled to a scoreless draw. The women’s soccer match Friday against Wisconsin was postponed because of lightning.
- Approximately 40 pro scouts attended the Ohio State baseball team’s pro scout day Thursday afternoon … because the Baseball Bucks Go Pro! Coach Greg Beals has seen 18 of his players drafted, including Dominic Canzone and Andrew Magno in June after leading the Buckeyes to the Big Ten tournament championship and third NCAA appearance in the last four years.
- Women’s softball hosted its Ohio Collegiate Charity Classic for the 19th time over the weekend. The event has previously raised over $250,000, making it one of the largest fundraisers for Breast Cancer Awareness month in central Ohio. Proceeds benefit The Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research at the OSUCCC-James.
- Freshman Katelyn Abeln will compete Tuesday and Wednesday this week in Fort Benning, Ga., at the 2019 Rifle-Pistol Fall Selection, Olympic Trials Part 1 event. She will compete in the 25-meter sport pistol competition.
- Calling out in a good way Mike Penner, Ericka Hoon, Evan Derr, Mike “Smitty” Smith and the entire Ohio Stadium staff, plus the American Red Cross and Columbus Fire. An appreciative email from a gentlemen who was a “bit overcome by the oppressive heat” at the Miami football game thanked the department for the “comforting” care and assistance he and many others received.
