COLUMBUS, Ohio — In a battle of two top-15 ranked teams, No. 8 Iowa edged No. 14 Ohio State on Friday, 2-1, at Grant Field in Iowa City. With the loss, Ohio State is 4-4 on the season and 0-2 in Big Ten play while Iowa improves to 8-2, 1-0.
The first goal of the contest was secured in the 18th minute by Hawkeye Leah Zellner. She dribbled it into the circle and fired a successful shot into the goal to put the Hawkeyes up 1-0. Late into the second quarter, freshman Sarah Charley scored the first goal for Ohio State with an assist by Tess Maloney to put the Buckeyes on the board.
The score remained tied in the second half until Leah Zellner secured possession from a turnover and scored her second goal of the game. The Buckeyes were unable to create offensive opportunities in the final ten minutes, and the game ended in favor of the Hawkeyes.
The assist by Maloney marks her third of the season, making her to the fourth leading point scorer for the Scarlet and Gray. Charley’s notched a collegiate first with her second-quarter goal. The Hawkeyes outshot the Buckeyes 15-5 in today’s game with five penalty corners going to Iowa and two to Ohio State. Goalie Aaliyah Hernandez made two saves.
