COLUMBUS, Ohio – For their efforts in Saturday’s 76-5 win over Miami to close out non-conference play, a total of 10 players – four on offense, five on defense and one on special teams – have been named champions by Ohio State’s coaching staff. The Buckeyes also honored four Players of the Game – WR Chris Olave, DT Haskell Garrett, DE Chase Young and CB Sevyn Banks (special teams).
The trio of WR Garrett Wilson, DE Javonte Jean-Baptiste and Garrett earned champion status for the first time this season. Four-time champions are Young, Olave and DT Davon Hamilton. Young has been the team’s Defensive Player of the Game in three of four contests so far.
Olave, last week’s Specials Teams Player of the Week, has caught a touchdown pass in three of four games this season after his three-catch, 30-yard performance with a pair of scores on Saturday. Olave and Josh Imatorbhebhe of Illinois are tied for the Big Ten lead in touchdown catches.
Wilson had a productive day against Miami, both on offense and special teams. He caught a team-high four passes for 54 yards, including a 38-yard touchdown in the third quarter from Chris Chugunov. Wilson also returned a punt 52 yards, Ohio State’s longest return since Jalin Marshall went 54 yards for a touchdown vs. Indiana in 2014.
Garrett had four tackles and 1.5 tackles-for-loss while Young registered two sacks and two forced fumbles for a defense that held Miami to just 10 total yards over the final three quarters. Young is tied with Illinois’ Oluwole Betiku Jr. for the national lead in sacks (7.0). He’s the first player to force two fumbles in a game since Anderson Russell vs. Minnesota in 2008.
Banks blocked a second-quarter punt and provided key blocks to spring Wilson on his 52-yard punt return. Ohio State’s special teams unit has now blocked a kick in three consecutive games (FG vs. Cincinnati, punt vs. Indiana and punt vs. Miami).
