Athletics Good Stuff
- The women’s volleyball team won its own Buckeye Invite over the weekend to extend its winning streak to four consecutive matches and improve its record to 7-5 on the season.
- The women’s ice hockey team is celebrating its 20th year as a program this season. Coach Nadine Muzerall, the WCHA coach of the year in 2018 when she led the Buckeyes to the Frozen Four, is in her fourth season as coach. The Buckeyes open their season against St. Lawrence Friday and Saturday at the OSU Ice Rink.
- Junior volleyball outside hitter Kyle Skinner is the latest Buckeye to springboard his Huntington Bucks Go Pro internship into something bigger. The film studies major directed a 90-minute documentary titled “Test City, USA” which was featured at the 2019 Columbus Film Festival and earned the ‘Best Ohio Feature’ award. - The women’s soccer team opened Big Ten play by splitting a pair of home matches against Michigan State and Michigan. The win: 1-0 over a 7-1 MSU team on Kayla Fischer’s team-leading fourth goal of the season in the 77th minute. The Buckeyes have won three of their last four matches.
- Coach Brian Maisonneuve’s men’s soccer team is now 5-2 heading into a pair of games this week. The team will look to extend its 10-year program best road win streak to five when it travels to Evanston to take on Northwestern on Friday.
- Sophomore soccer standout Devyn Etling is on fire. He has five goals this season and was named Big Ten player of the week last week. Meanwhile, goal keeper Parker Siegfried has three shutouts this year and 15 for his career.
- The hot start from the nationally ranked (No. 12) field hockey team – now 4-3 with all three losses to nationally ranked teams – is fueled in part from the emergence of four freshmen who have each started every game: Mackenzie Allessie, Leanne Bough, Sarah Charley and Delaney Lawler.
- Both tennis programs have nationally ranked players leading them in their respective fall seasons. The men’s team has five ranked players and is led by junior John McNally at No. 11. Three nationally ranked women’s players are led by sophomore Isabella Boulais, who is ranked No. 36.
- The pistol team has named its captains for the 2019-20 season: junior Emily Nothnagle, a Big Ten Conference Distinguished Scholar, and junior Bernard Melus, a second-team All-American in free pistol last season.
- French Field House will be the site of the Fencing team’s season opening events this weekend: the OSU Open on Saturday and the OSU Duals on Sunday. Coach Donald Anthony Jr.’s program is coming off a sixth-place finish at the 2019 NCAA championships.
- Remember that back nine charge at TPC River’s Bend in Maineville, Ohio, last spring that carried the women’s golf team to its 18th Big Ten title and 11th for coach and director of golf Therese Hession? Members of the team were awarded their 2019 Big Ten championship rings at a ceremony Friday evening at the Jane and Walt Dennis Performance Center.
