
No. 1 Ohio State dominates No. 35 Minnesota, 7-0

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s tennis team dominated the Minnesota Golden Gopher on Sunday afternoon, defeating their conference opponent 7-0.
The Buckeyes entered the match No. 1 in the nation and 3-0 in conference play with wins over Penn State, Michigan State, Michigan and Wisconsin. Ohio State began the match with a win in doubles play. This marks the 21st doubles in in 22 matches for the Buckeyes. Ohio State began doubles play trailing in each of the three matches, but would quickly turn things around. Big performances from the Alex Kobelt, Kyle Seelig, Hunter Tubert and John McNally propelled the Buckeyes in front.
Singles play is where the Buckeyes began to dominate the courts and assert themselves above the Gophers. Five of six courts had Ohio State winning the first set, and only one match all day went to a third set. No. 1 JJ Wolf defeated No. 35 Josip Krstanovic in dominant fashion, 6-2, 6-0 to start thing for Ohio State. Soon enough, the rest of the Buckeyes would close out their second sets to complete their victories. With Ohio State up 6-0, all that was left was senior Martin Joyce on Court 3. Joyce initally trailed after the first set 6-7, but would put on a show in the second set to rally 6-1. Into the third set, Joyce trailed 6-8, but would win five of the next six points and go on to win 6-7, 6-1, 1-0(9).
Ohio State’s win over Minnesota puts them at 20-2 overall in 2019. This marks the 19th-straight season under Ty Tucker the Buckeyes have won 20 or more matches. Ohio State only eclipsed the 20 win mark seven times in the program’s first 87 years. The Buckeyes also advance to 5-0 in conference play, and pick up their 17th ranked win this season.
Up next for the Buckeyes is a road trip out west to Nebraska on April 5 and Iowa on April 7. The following weekend, Ohio State will hit the road again as they take on Illinois and Northwestern. Ohio State’s next home match will be against the Purdue Boilermakers on April 19.
