PALO ALTO, Calif. – Taking on its third top-5 team in the last three weeks, Ohio State just didn't have enough on Sunday night to match No. 1 Stanford, falling 71-52 at Maples Pavilion.
Janai Crooms led the Buckeyes with 15 points while Dorka Juhasz had 10 points and a pair of steals.
The story of the night was turnovers and who could make them pay. Ohio State committed 24 turnovers and Stanford seemed to convert off those turnovers to hold the momentum. On the other end, Ohio State forced Stanford into 21 turnovers of its own but the Buckeyes didn't do enough with those turnovers to pull the upset.
Jacy Sheldon forced three of those turnovers with three steals and she finished with seven points. Fellow freshman Madison Greene came off the bench and gave the Buckeyes solid minutes, finishing with four points and a pair of steals.
For the game, Stanford shot 50 percent from the floor and the Buckeyes countered with 38.6 percent. Freshman Haley Jones led four Stanford players in double figures with 15 points.
Stanford went on a 9-0 run to open the second quarter to turn a 17-13 lead at the end of the first into a 26-13 advantage four minutes into the second. The Cardinal held that edge the rest of the quarter and was in front 37-23 at the break.
Both teams traded runs and timeouts in the third quarter but the Buckeyes weren't able to cut into the lead. Stanford kept its 14-point edge at 56-42 through three quarters. The Buckeyes were never able to really threaten the rest of the night.
Ohio State will head north a couple hours to Sacramento where it will take on Sacramento State on Tuesday evening. Tip-off is set for 10:05 p.m. ET. This will be the first meeting between the two teams. The Hornets have started the year 1-6 with its lone win coming over Cal Maritime on Nov. 13.
