Academic Honor Roll Selections Recognized

A special group of Ohio State student-athletes was recognized on the court at halftime of the Buckeye men’s basketball team’s win over Villanova last week. More than 650 student-athletes who earned Academic Honor Roll distinction were spotlighted at the game.
“The Academic Honor Roll recognition was one of the highlights of the academic year for our student-athletes and SASSO Staff,” Derek Cowherd, Ohio State Senior Associate Athletics Director and SASSO executive director, said. “We are very thankful and appreciative that Gene Smith, Dr. Hume, Dr. Davidson, the athletics administration and our coaches were supportive of the idea to recognize the 650+ students for the first time publicly in front of a large home crowd. Not only does this new initiative build camaraderie among fellow student-athletes, it helps build an even stronger culture of academic excellence. We are so proud of their accomplishments and marvel at their ability to excel academically as well as athletically.”
The student-athletes appreciated the recognition.
“About 15 football players were able to attend and we all really enjoyed it,” sophomore family financial services major Treyvon Wilburn said. “This shows the appreciation Ohio State athletics has for its student-athletes by highlighting our academic successes.”
“It was a really gratifying experience getting to be recognized alongside of Buckeye student-athletes from all 36 teams in front of Buckeye Nation,” Danielle Wolf, a senior on the women’s tennis team and communication major, said. “It’s really special when all of us can come together, especially when it was in such an electrifying environment like the Ohio State vs. Villanova basketball game.”
“It was an exciting, fun experience that made me feel unique amongst a large pool of students,” Asa Burke, a junior middle education major on the men’s track and field team said.
Ohio State student-athletes, who were enrolled in 133 different undergraduate majors, were outstanding in the classroom in 2018-19, ending the year with a combined cumulative grade-point average across teams of 3.221. In all, 32 teams had a 3.00 or higher GPA in the spring. At the annual Ohio State Scholar-Athlete dinner, 674 standouts were recognized. In all, 169 earned their Ohio State degrees.
