COLUMBUS, Ohio – Freshman Mackenzie Allessie scored three times and a potent Ohio State offense helped the 15th-ranked Buckeyes defeat Ohio 6-1 on Sunday afternoon in Athens, Ohio. With the win, Ohio State is 6-4 on the season while the Bobcats fall to 5-4.
Allessie is the first freshman to have a three-goal game since Maddy Humphrey vs. Appalachian State in 2014. Other Ohio State scorers were Sarah Charley, Jessica Hourihane and Esther Clotet Alsina.
The Buckeyes have won scored six goals in back to back games and are averaging 4.00 goals per game. Allessie now has a team-high 11 goals on the year and 27 overall points.
After a scoreless first quarter, Allessie put Ohio State on the board in the 23rd minute off a successful penalty corner. Genevieve and Adelaide Penzone were credited with assists on the play. Holding a 1-0 lead entering the fourth quarter, Ohio State’s offense erupted for five goals in the final 15 minutes, the first coming from Charley, who scored in her third straight game. Her goal was assisted by Allessie.
The Buckeyes put three more goals on the board in less than three minutes to put the game out of reach. The first came from Allessie at 54:22 followed 38 seconds later by Hourihane and 27 seconds after that by Clotet Alsina.
The defense was a collective effort in today’s match. In goal, Aaliyah Hernandez made just one save as the defense in front of her limited Ohio to just two total shots on goal. Ohio State had a 17-6 edge in total shots and 6-4 advantage in penalty corners. In all of Ohio State’s victories this season, the team has kept opponents to two or fewer goals.
The Buckeyes return home on Friday, Oct. 11 for a key Big Ten showdown with No. 9 Michigan. Game time is set for 4 p.m. and admission is free.
