Athletics Good Stuff
- Ohio State is hosting the ITA MW Regional tennis tournament and two Buckeyes – Kyle Seelig and John McNally – have powered through the draw and will meet for the championship at 11:30 a.m. this morning. McNally will team with Robert Cash and play for the doubles title against a duo from Michigan.
- Women’s cross country placed 13th out of 36 teams at the strong, Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational Friday in Madison, Wisc. Abby Nichols finished 28th in a field of more than 250 racers.
- The nationally ranked men’s (No. 5) and women’s (No. 14) swimming and diving teams opened their respective dual meet seasons against nationally ranked Texas A&M teams this weekend. Molly Kowal was a double winner for the women (1,000 and 500 freestyle events), as was Paul Delakis for the men (200 and 500 freestyles).
- The men’s hockey team split a weekend series with former CCHA foe Omaha and now is 2-1-1 on the season heading into one more non-conference weekend before the start of Big Ten play.
- Women’s hockey skated to a pair of ties on the road at Mankato State this weekend and is now 4-2-2 on the season.
- What an honor! Women’s hockey forward Emma Maltais, who is from Burlington, Ontario, was named to the 23-player Canadian National Team roster and will play in a two-game series against the U.S. National Team Nov. 8-10 in Cranberry Township, Pa. at the UPMMC Lemieux Sports Complex.
- Freshman Jenaisya Moore led Ohio State for a third consecutive match with 16 kills and Elle Sandbothe (12 kills) and Gabby Gonzales (nine) provided plenty of support in a three-set victory over Iowa, part of a 1-1 week for women’s volleyball.
- Seniors’ Salute: five field hockey seniors played their final home games this past weekend and were honored prior to the game Sunday against No. 2 Maryland: Jennica Jonovich, Genevieve Penzone, Adelaide Penzone, Whitney Harris and Esther Clotet Alsina.
- Sr. Jack Holland continues to lead the men’s soccer team in both assists (7) and points (15).
- Here’s some high praise from reporter Doug Lesmerises, of Cleveland.com: “In 15 years, I have not covered an Ohio State defensive player any more dominant than Chase Young.”
- Women’s golf had a fine effort last week at the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C. finishing in a tie for third out of 18 teams.
- Soph. Kayla Fischer leads the women’s soccer team, which has played to three draws in its last four matches, in scoring with four goals and three assists for 11 points.
- Goalie Tommy Nappier was named the Big Ten Conference’s “first star of the week” last week after leading the Buckeyes to a win in the Ice Breaker Tournament.
- Sofia Seldemirova won the Dayton Flyer Invitational golf tournament last week at the NCR Country Club. Teammate Alanis Sakuma was also impressive: she placed fifth.
- Here’s your World Series champion: Gray! Ohio State’s Gray team defeated Scarlet, 8-5, Sunday at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium in the third and deciding game of the 2019 Scarlet & Gray World Series.
- The pistol team swept all three disciplines – air, sport and standard – and defeated ARMY, 6,596-6,446, over the weekend in West Point, N.Y.
- Three-time All-American Joey Sindelar, who led the men’s golf team to the 1979 national championship, was inducted into his home state New York Golf Hall of Fame earlier this month.
