Athletics Good Stuff
- Coach Steve Rohlik’s seventh Ohio State hockey team opened its season by winning the 23rd Ice Breaker Tournament, held at the Huntington Center in Toledo, this weekend with a tie/shootout win over Western Michigan and a 3-1 victory over RIT in the championship game.
- Senior captain Ronnie Hein scored twice against RIT to key the offense while goalie Tommy Nappier stopped 68 of 71 shots in the tourney, including a career-high 44 against WMU. The team opens its 2019-20 home campaign this weekend against Omaha.
- A spirited comeback – two goals within 30 seconds in the 63rd minute to tie the contest at 2-all – fell short as Cleveland State scored the game-winner three minutes later to keep the Buckeyes from victory in the 18th annual Connor Senn Memorial Game Saturday night. Pregame and halftime tributes honored Senn, and the game is a forum to raise awareness for sudden cardiac arrest.
- The pistol teams picked up wins over Akron and Purdue over the weekend. The women’s trio of Katelyn Abeln, Grace Praisler and Emily Rust set new school records in the air pistol and sport pistol competitions.
- The women’s hockey team battled defending national champion and No. 1-ranked Wisconsin all weekend despite dropping the two games at the OSU Ice Rink. Liz Schepers scored twice in Saturday’s finale – her third and fourth goals of the year – and Brooke Bink scored her first goal as a Buckeye in the game.
- A trio of experienced seniors – Ryan Terefenko, Jeff Henrick and Lukas Buckley – will captain the 2020 Ohio State men’s lacrosse team. Terefenko and Henrick are returning captains while Buckley earns the honor for the first time. The trio has combined to play in 141 career games and all three are OSU Scholar-Athletes.
- The women’s volleyball team went 1-1 last week with a win over Rutgers and a loss at No. 8 Penn State to sit 9-9 overall and 2-4 in the Big Ten.
- The final two home matches of the season are this week for the women’s soccer team, which is coming off a tie at Purdue and a 1-0 loss at Indiana over the weekend. The Buckeyes play Northwestern on Thursday; Illinois on Sunday.
- Field hockey, now 6-6 on the season, has played seven nationally ranked teams so far and will play two more this weekend to close out its home schedule at Buckeye Varsity Field: Rutgers and Maryland.
- The women’s golf team tied for third in the 18-team field at the 44th annual Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational Sunday at UNC Finley Golf Course. The Buckeyes finished just three strokes back of champion Michigan State and two back of second-place Alabama. Aneka Seumanutafa shot 7-under par for the tourney and tied for third.
- Cannon Kingsley defeated five consecutive ranked opponents to win the consolation bracket at the ITA All-American Championships Sunday afternoon in Tulsa, Okla. Kingsley now advances to next month’s ITA Fall Championship in Newport Beach, Calif.
