COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s volleyball team fought hard but came up short in four sets (25-19, 18-25, 29-27, 25-20) to Northwestern at St. John Arena on Sunday afternoon. The loss leaves the Buckeyes with a 12-14 overall record and 3-11 mark in Big Ten action while the Wildcats move to 14-12 overall and 4-10 in league play.
Vanja Bukilic notched a team-best 13 kills, seven digs and two services aces during her 21st match in double figures. Becca Mauer chipped in a career-high nine kills with 12 digs and three service aces. Lauren Witte and Adria Powell added eight and seven kills, respectively, while Bia Franklin posted four kills, five digs, three aces and two assists. Olivia Dailey got in on the action with a match-high 38 helpers.
Defensively, Hannah Gruensfelder led both teams with 24 digs. Powell and Dailey both got involved at the net behind four and three blocks, respectively.
SET 1: The match began with the teams trading points until the Wildcats took a 16-12 lead that sent the Buckeyes to their bench. Ohio State tried to get back in the swing of things but dropped the set, 25-19.
SET 2: Northwestern burned both of its timeouts early after Ohio State used a 4-0 run to double up, 12-6. The Wildcats attempted a comeback but the Buckeyes kept pounding away as Bukilic’s ace sealed the set, 25-18.
SET 3: After exchanging points, the Wildcats needed a break as back-to-back aces by Franklin gave the Buckeyes a 17-14 advantage. Northwestern battled to tie the score at 22-all. The teams locked the rally four more times until an error and kill gave NU a 29-27 winner.
SET 4: Things started with the squads going back and forth. Ohio State posted four straight points for a 19-17 edge but the Wildcats quickly responded to knot the set at 19-19 and force a timeout. Out of the break, Northwestern closed the set on a 6-1 sprint for a 25-20 decision.
