MTEN: No. 2 Buckeyes Roll Past Hawkeyes 7-0
Ohio State improves to 4-0 in Big Ten play
IOWA CITY, Iowa – The No. 2-ranked Ohio State men’s tennis team won its 18th-straight match over Big ten opponents on Friday with a 7-0 victory at Iowa.
Ohio State is now 19-3 on the season and 4-0 in Big Ten play.
The doubles point didn’t take long as the Buckeyes got a 6-1 win from Mikael Torpegaard and Herkko Pollanen over Jason Kerst and Tony Leto on court two and a 6-3 win from Martin Joyce and Hugo Di Feo over Kareem Allaf and Jonas Larsen on court one. JJ Wolf and Hunter Tubert were also well on their way leading 5-3.
The win was the seventh-straight without a loss for Joyce and Di Feo who improve to 10-1 this spring. After losing four of five matches, Torpegaard and Pollanen collect their fifth-straight win in as many matches and now have 14 wins on the year.
The story was the same in singles as the Buckeyes won the opening set in all six matches. Playing just his third singles match this spring, redshirt-freshman Alex Kobelt claimed his first Big ten victory with a 6-0, 6-0 white-washing of Leto.
Joyce followed with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Hallestrand on court five for his 13th singles win of the season. Kyle Seelig then clinched the match with his third-straight victory in the No. 4 spot, downing Jason Kerst 6-4, 6-2.
Top-ranked Torpegaard kept his unbeaten season intact with his 6-4, 7-5 win over Kareem Allaf on court one to make it 5-0 Buckeyes. Wolf won the opening set 6-3 over Jonas Larsen 6-3 but then dropped the second set 7-5. In the super-breaker, he raced out to an 8-1 lead and then would hold off Larsen for a 10-7 victory.
The final point came from Di Feo as he knocked-off Jake Jacoby 6-2, 7-6 for the Buckeyes’ fourth 7-0 victory of the season.
Ohio State will now head to Nebraska for a 1 p.m. ET match on Sunday afternoon. The Buckeyes are a perfect 9-0 all-time in matches with the Cornhuskers.
