COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 3 Ohio State Buckeyes returned to the Varsity Tennis Center for the first time since March 5th. It was a good return for the Buckeyes, as they swept the Michigan State Spartans 7-0.
The win improves the Buckeyes to 2-0 in conference play, and 17-3 on the year. The Spartans drop to 0-3 in conference play, and 10-9 overall.
The Buckeyes earned the doubles point without much difficulty. Herkko Pollanen and Mikael Torpegaard won first for the Buckeyes on court 2, blitzing Billy Shisler and Doug Francken. JJ Wolf and Hunter Tubert clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 victory over Brett Forman and Alexander Kim on court 3. Hugo Di Feo and Martin Joyce also appeared to be in good hands with a 5-2 lead over Jasper Koenen and Michael Dube on court 1 when their match ended.
Singles was also a dominant performance for the Buckeyes. Di Feo quickly put away Koenen with a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Kyle Seelig was next to follow with a 6-1, 6-2 win against Ivan Rakic. Joyce ensured the Buckeye victory with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Kim. From there, the two teams elected to play the remaining matches out.
Matt Mendez got some action at singles as well, with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Shisler. Torpegaard continued his undefeated run, defeating Forman 6-3, 6-3. Wolf was last to finish, dropping the first set to Dube in a tiebreaker, but turning it on in the second set and super tiebreaker to win 6-7 (3-7), 6-2, 1-0 (10-5).
After a quick break from playing ranked teams, the Buckeyes get right back into it on Sunday, travelling to Ann Arbor to face the No. 16 Michigan Wolverines at Noon.
