AUSTIN, Texas – Playing in just its second outdoor match this spring, the No. 2 Ohio State men’s tennis team fell at No. 8 Texas 4-3 on Wednesday afternoon at the Caswell Tennis Center in Austin.
This was just the second loss of the season for the Buckeyes who fall to 16-2. Texas improves to 15-4 overall.
The Buckeyes had struggled with the doubles point in recent matches but not on Wednesday. The No. 32 team of Martin Joyce and Hugo Di Feo continued their strong play with a 6-0 win over Colin Markes and Yuya Ito on court two. Joyce and Di Feo improve to 8-1 this spring.
The No. 15 pairing of Mikael Torpegaard and Herkko Pollanen claimed the doubles point for the Buckeyes with a nice 6-4 win over Leo Telles on George Goldhoff on court one. The match on court three featured the Buckeye duo of Hunter Tubert and freshman JJ Wolf. This was the first match together for those two and they were all square at 5-5 with Christian Sigsgaard and Julian Zlobinsky.
Singles play was as close as it could have been as all six matches went to a third set. The Buckeyes got off to a great start as Wolf knocked-off No. 70 Harrison Scott 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. The freshman is now 6-0 at the Nos. 2 and 3 spots this season.
Top-ranked Torpegaard followed suit with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 win over No. 12 Sigsgaard to make it 3-0 Buckeyes. This was his second win over Sigsgaard this year and he is now 15-0 this spring.
The Longhorns then turned the tables in the remaining matches. Pollanen rebounded from losing the first set against Goldhoff to win the second 6-4. But he then drop the third 6-4. Texas made it 3-2 as Telles outlasted Joyce in a third-set tie-break 7-5. Ito won a second-set tie-break with Di Feo and would then go on to win the third set 6-4 to even the score at 3-3.
That left the outcome on the shoulders of Buckeye freshman Kyle Seelig on court 6 against Rodrigo Banzer. Seelig got down 5-0 early in the first set but battle back to even the set 5-5 before falling 7-5. He then won the second 6-4 to force a deciding third set. Seelig went up a break at 5-4 and was serving for the match but Banzer broke right back. Both then held on their ensuing service games and the match headed to a tiebreaker. In the breaker, Banzer raced out to a 4-0 lead and would go on to win the tiebreaker 7-3.
The Buckeyes will remain in Texas for the rest of the week before taking on Texas A&M this Sunday in College Station. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m. ET.
