On an afternoon where a lot went right for Iowa and not much for Ohio State, the Hawkeyes came away with a 55-24 upset victory on Saturday at Kinnick Stadium.
Johnnie Dixon caught four passes for the Buckeyes on the day for 81 yards and two touchdowns. This was his second-straight game with multiple touchdown receptions.
Quarterback J.T. Barrett was 18-of-34 for 208 yards and three touchdowns but also had four interceptions. Iowa’s Joshua Jackson had three of those INT’s to spur the Hawkeyes defense on to one of their best performances of the year.
The game could not have started any better for Iowa as Amani Hooker intercepted Barrett on the very first play and returned it 30 yards for a score. The Hawkeyes took a 7-0 lead just eight seconds into the contest.
The Buckeyes responded just over two minutes later as Barrett hit Terry McLaurin on a 29-yard touchdown strike to even the score at 7-7 before all of the fans were in their seats. After the teams traded field goals, Iowa capped an 11-play drive with a 10-yard touchdown connection between Nate Stanley and T.J. Hockenson to retake a 17-10 lead.
Barrett again went deep, this time to Dixon for a 44-yard touchdown and the Buckeyes were back to even at 17-17 early in the second quarter.
Iowa then took advantage of a pair of Buckeye mistakes and scored 14 unanswered points to close the half. Nick Bosa was called for and ultimately ejected for targeting and one play later, Stanley hit Fant for a touchdown. Barrett then threw his second interception of the game and again Stanley found Fant for another score just 30 seconds before the half and Iowa led 31-17 at the break.
Neither team was able to do much offensively for most of the third quarter until the Hawkeyes pulled out a little trickery. A fake field goal on fourth down led to another touchdown and the hosts had the lead and all the momentum headed to the fourth quarter.
On the first play of the fourth, Stanley found Drake Kulick for a 2-yard TD and the Hawkeyes had built a 45-17 lead on 28 unanswered points. Barrett’s second touchdown pass to Dixon and a late Iowa touchdown on the ground provided the final margin.
