COLUMBUS, Ohio — Spring commencement on the campus of The Ohio State University was held in Ohio Stadium on a fine sunny Sunday today and nine among the 147 student-athletes who received their degrees were from the football program.
Seven of the nine were scholarship performers for the Buckeyes and all were a part of Ohio State’s 2014 national championship season. Two-time Academic All-American and National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete Jacoby Boren leads the contingent. Boren was a four-year letterman and a 28-game starter for the team. His degree is in sustainable plant systems.
Boren’s linemate, Pat Elflein, is a 29-game starter who is completing his fourth year with the program earned his degree in communications and will return this season for his final year of eligibility. He has already been named one of the team’s 2016 captains by head coach Urban Meyer.
Elflein is one of four current members of the team who graduated today.
Running back Bri’onte Dunn received his degree in sport industry. Dunn competed all spring for the starting running back position that has been manned so capably the past two years by Ezekiel Elliott, and he will continue pursuit of the position this fall.
Wide receiver Corey Smith, a 2013 recruit from East Mississippi Community College, did not practice this spring while recovering from a season-ending surgery last fall. He graduated today with his degree in African American and African studies.
And Cam Burrows, the first prospect to commit to Ohio State in the 2013 recruiting class, is now the first among his classmates to graduate as he earned his degree today in criminology in just three-and-one-half years. He’ll be a fourth-year junior — eligibility-wise — this fall vying to start at safety.
Curtis Grant, a captain on the 2014 national championship team, graduated with his degree in sociology. He is playing professionally in the NFL as a member of the Tennessee Titans.
Also graduating from the football program today: RB Warren Ball (sport industry), OL Chris Fong (pharmaceutical sciences) and WR Kato Mitchell (sport industry).
