COLUMBUS, Ohio — It was student appreciation day inside the Woody Hayes Athletic Center Saturday, the annual event where students are invited by coach Urban Meyer to watch and engage in practice activities with members of their Ohio State Buckeye football team. This year, for the fifth consecutive year, another impressive crowd of students was on hand with a crowd estimate of at least 2,500.
“I’ve never seen anything like this student appreciation day,” Hall of Fame coach and Meyer mentor Lou Holtz told the crowd. “This is unique. It’s great. And I’m proud to be back here because Ohio State is special. The state of Ohio is special. I think this day is special and I think this team is going to be special.”
About 12 rows deep of students sat and stood across the 30 yard line and watched an hour’s worth of scrimmage action by the team. Free food was provided by Rooster’s and Meijer. There was a fastest student race held once again and there was a post-practice autograph and photo session with the coaches and players.
“The students love it,” Greg Greve, a former baseball player at Ohio State who is working on his master’s in finance at the Fisher School of Business said. “This practice makes you feel as if coach Meyer really cares about the students. It’s really cool to see the players up close, to watch practice and to see the facility. You can tell that all the students are excited to be here.”
This was practice No. 8 for the Buckeyes during their 2016 spring drills. The team will practice six more times before concluding with the LiFE Sports Spring Game, presented by Nationwide, April 16 at 1:30 p.m. at Ohio Stadium.
