WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The bottom of the Ohio State singles lineup recorded three victories to lead the Buckeyes to a 4-0 victory Sunday afternoon at No. 57 Purdue.
The win improves the Buckeyes to 23-2 on the year and 7-0 in conference play. Ohio State has yet to surrender a point to a Big Ten opponent, the longest streak of Director of Tennis’ Ty Tucker’s tenure.
For the seventh-straight match, the Buckeyes won the doubles point, cruising with a 6-2 victory from Mikael Torpegaard and Martin Joyce at No. 2 and a 6-1 victory from Matt Mendez and Hugo Di Feo at No. 3.
Ohio State has had one of the best singles lineups from top to bottom this season and on Sunday, it was the bottom of the lineup that came through. Martin Joyce, who has been a stalwart at No. 6 this season, played No. 5 against the Boilermakers and rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Lucas Dages. That was his 13th singles win this spring without a loss.
Junior Matt Mendez claimed his second Big Ten singles victory of the year with an equally impressive 6-0, 6-0 romp of Matt Bouggy. He also won his singles match at Michigan State last month.
The clinching point came from Ralf Steinbach as he downed Renan Hanayama 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4. He now pulls into a tie with Torpegaard for the team lead with 23 singles victories this season.
The Buckeyes won the first set in all six singles matches on Sunday. Torpegaard defeated No. 39 Gergely Madarasz 7-5 in the opening set at No. 1 and was leading 3-2 in the second. Di Feo was leading Ricky Medinilla 6-2, 5-2 when the match was clinched while Chris Diaz took a 6-4 victory over Mateus Silva at No. 3 singles.
Ohio State remains on the road next weekend when it plays at Minnesota on Friday night followed by a match at Wisconsin on Sunday. The match in Minneapolis is set to start at 4 p.m. ET while the match with the Badgers is scheduled for a 1 p.m. ET start.
